False Spar Ribs

Wing Trailing Edge Ribs. This photo shows the completed ribs which go between the false spar and the rear spar. These ribs are not flanged as the drawings states to flange only the ribs made from the .025" material. Here I began to fabricate the four ribs which go between the false spar (behind the fuel tanks) and the aft spar. I used the form blocks depicted above for consistency throughout all of the center rib fabrication.

Here are the completed TE Cove ribs, awaiting alodine and primer. In this photo you can see the notched flanges for the TE Cove ribs. This is a photograph of the wing cove ribs for the aileron cavity. Pictured are the layout board, the two form blocks, and two of the ribs. Here are the formed wing trailing edge ribs, awaiting for primer. When it came time to flange the smaller lightning holes, I found it easier to make a new flanging tool with a smaller diameter and longer bevel on the nose.

Tooling

Here is the tooling I made for the flap and aileron hinge arms. The alignment rod (silver piece) was made for me by a friend on a lathe he had access to. The instructions for this tool can also be found in the Beartracks news letter. In this view you can see the flap control arm sitting in the tool. Nose Ribs

Wing Trailing Edge Ribs. Here is a view of the nose ribs with the stiffeners installed. I started making the stiffeners for nose and center ribs. For the most part each stiffener is unique to its location so I did not spend too much time trying to make tooling for these parts. I trimmed each one to length, then located and drilled the fastener holes. After deburring. This is a view of the nose ribs after being formed. Wing Construction

Wing Trailing Edge Ribs. The wings of the Bearhawk are completely fabricated and covered with 2024-T3 aluminum with the exception of the flight controls which covered with fabric. The actuation mechanism for these flight controls is fabricated from 4130 chromoly steel. As I am familiar with sheet metal work, I started with the wing construction first and I will only use Alclad aluminum for the additional corrosion protection it provides.

Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Centipedes, Spiders and Nails. Well, the title pretty much sums up our new apartment in Dallas. Thank goodness it is only for 3 weeks! We moved in last Sunday and our little million legged friends were waiting in every corner to greet us. I have never seen so many centipedes. They walk across the carpet like they own the place. Thank goodness for vacuums! Every morning I wake up and Ellie and I go hunting. We usually find about ten before breakfast. Wednesday, July 20, 2011.
