https://petersponderings.wordpress.com/2011/09/27/mongolia-part-2-ulaan-baatar-routine-first-two-excursions
Peter's Wanderings and Ponderings. Chronicling my adventures abroad…. Mongolia Part 2: Ulaan Baatar Routine, First Two Excursions. The Mongolian cuisine was quite delightful if one first got past the fact that it was heavy and often greasy, consisting largely of mutton-based dishes. Some of the traditional plates were the bos, or stuffed dumplings, hearty meat stews, manto, or steamed white bread, and who could forget the fermented mare’s milk and dried camel’s yogurt which nearly made me gag! I think th...

Peter's Wanderings and Ponderings. Chronicling my adventures abroad…. Mongolia Part 1: Personalities from our Travels. Mongolia was an incredible experience. It was a country that I had no preconceived notions of (okay- besides that one Southpark episode! To home visits to meet with old friends of his (who happen to be nomadic herders of 80 years), to unsolicited sessions with renowned scholars on ancient Mongol scripts (to help us with our projects, of course). I shall fondly recall the Abbott’s war...

Peter's Wanderings and Ponderings. Chronicling my adventures abroad…. Welcome to my blog! I am open to suggestions regarding content, style, etc. I reiterate, I have never blogged and I would like to provide my readership with the type of material they desire, while still of course preserving an electronic record of the trip for my own benefit. So, let’s get started…. The drama and tension at its height could be characterized by this brief, and fairly accurate although somewhat stylized, depiction of the...

An American in Ulaanbaatar…. May 26, 2014. Sainshand, The East Gobi. Intrepid sunrise-seekers battle the fierce late-April winds. Yes, it’s early…. Two restored monasteries in the foreground, with a Buddhist shrine, a stupa, nearby. After catching some rays of sunlight, we walked back to the ger where we slept for a couple hours, breakfasted on snacks and coffee we brought, and embarked on our day tour with our slightly sheepish guide (who may have slept through his alarm and our calls! This road connect...

Serving as “The Other” | Mongolian Musings
https://peterswanderings.com/2014/06/25/serving-as-the-other
An American in Ulaanbaatar…. June 25, 2014. Serving as “The Other”. Being an Outsider and Bridging the Gap! As a white male living in Mongolia, I stand out considerably in a crowd. My pasty skin, dark reddish beard, and long, prominent nose clearly set me apart from ethnic Mongols which make up nearly 95% of all Mongolians. As an obvious outsider, I receive a wide range of reactions from locals when I’m out in public. How are you, teacher? A better-than-average day during peak pollution season here.

An American in Ulaanbaatar…. May 12, 2014. Gallery: Train Ride to the Dornogobi! Leaving Ulaanbaatar and its snowy sprawling ger districts. Springtime is a great season to take trains here because roads often look like this or worse! The signs of industrial development are obvious! While many nomadic herders are settling down on the peripheries of Mongolian cities and settlements, their livestock are often still nearby! The road less traveled? You can almost feel the crisp clean relief from UB smog.

Friday, December 16, 2011. Report on Abigail Adams. I am reading Abigail Adams by Natalie S. Bober, for school. I am enjoying this book. This is what I have learned so far. Abigail Smith was born on November 11, 1744. Her mother and father were Elizabeth Quincy Smith and William Smith. They lived in Weymouth, Massachusetts, 10 miles from Boston. Weymouth was the first community in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. More to come…. Friday, June 10, 2011. Friday, May 20, 2011. It is every Saturday morning. L...

Sunday, January 29, 2012. On that topic, over the past few weeks, I have learned that four members of the Knights in Ontario have gone to their eternal reward: Joe Cinti, Barry Kay, Tom Dalton, and Vince Morin. These four people were not household names: you did not see their names in the paper on a regular basis, nor did they have the trappings of fame bestowed on them. I never met Vince Morin, but read of his passing in his Council's bulletin. In the tribute that was published, it was noted that he...
