Considering the advanced age of some elementary pupils, many starting school late and finishing primary school in their mid-teens, and the lack of quality early childhood education programs available for the most disadvantaged, a separate pre-school and playground were built in 2009 with funding from ING Direct Kids Foundation. It was felt that many of the so called learning disabilities identified through psychological screening were probably caused by a lack of early stimulation and pre-school education.

With no electricity, water or sewage. They wish for a better future for their children. The majority of our students come from such families. Zaña is located on the coast of Peru. It is 45 km south of Chiclayo and. 770 km north of Lima. The valley of Zaña lies in the coastal desert of Northern Peru. Traditional rice cultivation in the Zaña Valley made possible through irrigation. Internal migrants from the Sierra build their houses of adobe. They often cook on unhealthy, open wood fires.

A School for Parents takes place once a month to address a variety of issues such as nutrition, family violence and discipline. The participation of fathers remains an ongoing challenge. Although many parents never had the opportunity to attend school, they are seen as key partners in the education of their children and the teachers try to involve them as much as possible in school activities.
