Random Rants, by Thomas Andrew Olson. Tuesday, February 07, 2006. The "final word" about the Cartoon Riots? Here's an interesting take from a bunch of cartoonists on all the brouhaha. Most of it's pretty predictable, you have to scroll to the very end to get to the good part:. Chronicle cartoonist Don Asmussen will take on the subject in Wednesday's comic, but he has decided that it won't include an image of the prophet. Posted by TomsRants at 4:38 PM. Links to this post. Quote for the Day. Perhaps we sh...

Ambivalent Engineer: Window 8.1 is unusable on a desktop
http://ambivalentengineer.blogspot.com/2014/04/window-81-is-unusable-on-desktop.html
Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Window 8.1 is unusable on a desktop. For the last two years I've been doing a lot of SolidWorks Simulation on my Lenovo W520 laptop. This thing has been great. But I've started doing fluid flow simulations, and it's time for more CPU than a 3.3 GHz (limited by heat load) dual core Sandy Bridge. I have learned that Windows 8.1 is unusable for a workstation. Metro apps are full screen. Catastrophe. When I click on a datasheet PDF in Windows 7, it pops up in a window and I stick i...

Ambivalent Engineer: Vegetarians use... similar water
http://ambivalentengineer.blogspot.com/2015/04/vegetarians-use-more-water.html
Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Vegetarians use. similar water. The Los Angeles Times has the best tool that I've yet seen for understanding the amount of water used in agriculture. It lets you put together various proteins, starches, vegetables, and drinks to make a typical dinner, and shows you how much water it takes to produce all those things. Check it out. The biggest consumers of water are all proteins: beef, lamb, and pork. For most meals the protein consumes way more than half of all the water....Consi...

Ambivalent Engineer: September 2014

Sunday, September 14, 2014. Quick trip to the Sierras. On Friday I took a quick trip to the Sierras to grab some Ponderosa pine forest images with a drone. Initially, the logging road was just gorgeous. Eventually I got up to my target location. That pile of wood is slash from a logging operation that probably happened in the last few years. Target. Life is good. Sunday, September 14, 2014. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Blueprint for 100 New Nuclear Reactors in 20 Years.

Ambivalent Engineer: October 2013
http://ambivalentengineer.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 31, 2013. This is a huge post, about a subject that may not be terribly interesting. I suspect most of you will want to skim all but the first section, and come back later when I refer to this post from later posts. Daily commute traffic is the most important market. The better Hyperloop addresses this market, the more revenue it will get. I have looked at the California High Speed Rail project’s expected traffic volume (example. About the only other thing it might accomplish is removin...
