Phainopepla Fables: Christmas Birding Trip: Bill Williams to Yuma

Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley. Monday, January 21, 2013. Christmas Birding Trip: Bill Williams to Yuma. This post is a bit belated, but December 15 was my first Christmas Bird Count of the season, the Yuma/Martinez Lake count. Centered on Imperial Dam, the count circle is equal parts Yuma County, AZ and Imperial County, AZ. Since Yuma is a good three hour drive, I thought it might be wise to camp down there so I could be fresh for bird counting first thing in the morning! The Loch Ness Scoter.
Phainopepla Fables: April 2012
http://phainopepla.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley. Thursday, April 26, 2012. With temperatures creeping above 100 in the past week, those of us along the river here were happy to hear that a front was coming through, bringing possible rain and highs in the 80s. Of course, there is always a potential for a front like this to drop migrants and make for good birding. To see, including an estimated 60 Wilson's Warblers. With some signs of movement in Lake Havasu City, we decided to head down to the Bill Williams De...
Phainopepla Fables: Area megas: Ivory Gull and Common Crane!
http://phainopepla.blogspot.com/2013/01/area-megas-ivory-gull-and-common-crane.html
Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley. Friday, January 18, 2013. Area megas: Ivory Gull and Common Crane! It's been a wild week for the Colorado River below the Grand Canyon. Two days ago (January 16), the news came in that an Ivory Gull. Still, this is an amazing first state record if accepted by the ABC. It's so fortunate that the observers, who I gather were not birders, thought to photograph the bird and send them to Andrew Core. Check out the stunning photos here. After seeing the bird, we stop...
Phainopepla Fables: The Nutting's Flycatcher is back!
http://phainopepla.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-nuttings-flycatcher-is-back.html
Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley. Friday, November 30, 2012. The Nutting's Flycatcher is back! Just after 8:00 this morning, after about 15 minutes of birding, I was walking down the road at Mosquito Flats in Bill Williams River NWR, planning out my post to the listserv about the continued absence of the Nutting's Flycatcher. Of course it was at that moment that I heard that singular "WHEEP! I didn't think I had missed it so much, but that sound brought a huge smile to my face. It's back! Decem...

TPAD: September 2014
http://tpadsefi.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 19, 2014. The Avian Fairies' Sparkling Hoard. Today dawned with fog and without promise. But, as dawn matured, the fog lifted and the birds descended. We had an excellent day on the island with many western migrants and a handful of eastern species plus a bonus from Siberia: Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Tennessee, and Magnolia Warblers, and two Red-throated Pipits. Highlight from the west was a lone Black Swift soaring overhead. ( See the eBird checklist here. Adam J. Searcy. A Farallones p...

Bird to Travel to Bird: Most Wanted: FOUND
http://wanderingandbirding.blogspot.com/2012/01/most-wanted-found.html
Bird to Travel to Bird. The adventures (and misadventures) of a sometime wildlife biologist, sometime wildlife tour guide. Saturday, January 21, 2012. I had been keeping my eyes on the Rare Bird Alerts for the Rochester, New. York area, for any birds that I might have the opportunity to see during. My brief trip home during the holidays. I was committed to staying in. Texas until the 20th of December, and I would have some limited free time. Birding. Oh boy! And headed to the bay. Well as on the lake....

After an incredible day birding the Caracol ruins deep in the Chiquibul Rainforest, we made our way back to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Taking advantage of our high clearance vehicle, we drove down a horrible track to an area known as Big Rock Falls – an ideal place to set up camp for the night. Saturday, January 7, 2012. Black-tailed Gull in Ohio. Back on November 16. Last year, while backpacking somewhere in Tanzania, I remember checking my phone and learning that a Black-tailed Gull was discovered in Ashtabula, Ohio – a first state record and 20. Species of gull for Ohio (if accepted). Being 8,000 miles away, I had to accept that fact that I’m just not going to get that bird. OK, not just ‘that bird’, but an ABA Code-4 vagrant from East Asia! BTGU resting (c) Chris West. What will be next?
Nomadic Birder: Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), Belize & Guatemala (Part 3)
http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2013/01/yucatan-peninsula-mexico-belize.html
Monday, January 7, 2013. Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), Belize and Guatemala (Part 3). Although it was great to be able to practice my fading Spanish in Mexico, it felt even better to be back in an English speaking country, which really makes logistics a whole lot easier. Unlike the rest of Central America, the official language of Belize, a former British colony, is English. Only 4% or so speak English at home though as the majority speak Spanish or Kriol. Along the way to Caracol. One of two King Vultures.

Nomadic Birder: Mexico is calling!
http://nomadicbirder.blogspot.com/2012/12/mexico-is-calling.html
Sunday, December 9, 2012. Several weeks ago it occurred to me that this has been the longest period of time in probably a decade that I haven’t traveled somewhere outside of the Great Lakes. Contrary to this year, in 2011 I found myself in a dozen countries…not just five states. This is blatantly unacceptable. Where have I not been yet? What can be done on a budget? We’ll land in Cancun and proceed doing a big loop starting off on Cozumel for island endemics. We’ll then head south spendin...And the Carac...

A cyber-space to question what is and what ought to be. Thursday, May 22, 2014. I never seem to be capable of grasping me. Me is that space and time where you and I inter-act. You see me has a head while I am headless. Saturday, January 5, 2013. We all have reasons for why we take personal development serious. But, ultimately, there are only three reasons personal development should matter to you. Increased awareness and understanding of who and what you are. Understanding who and what you are opens you ...

Phainopepla Fables | Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley and Beyond
Birding in the Lower Colorado River Valley and Beyond. March 21, 2014. The birds don’t need to see the Equinox on the calendar to know that spring is here. Here in western Arizona, they’ve been on the move for a few weeks now! Lucy’s Warblers are in full song on territories, Bell’s Vireos are starting to set up shop, and some of the migrants such as Warbling Vireo and Wilson’s Warbler are starting to trickle in. For the past few years, I have compiled La Paz County for the NAMC. It is a unique county...
