Parapraxis: April 2011
http://joybrookefairfield.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Contemplating the practice of directing. Saturday, April 23, 2011. Fuck Yeah, Awkwardness! So I’m trying to start a movement. I think I’ll call it the awkwardness appreciation movement. In short, I believe that the emotional/affective/psychic experience that we often call awkwardness is beneficial, necessary for personal growth as well as social change, and should be courted rather than avoided. Awkwardness, however, is shame lite. In awkward experiences, we sense the precariousness of our ego boundaries...

Parapraxis: March 2014

Contemplating the practice of directing. Tuesday, March 11, 2014. Other men have tried to explain the phenomenon physically. Aristotle thought that the rainbow was caused by reflection of the sun’s rays by the rain. Since then physicists have found that it is not reflection, but refraction by the raindrops, which causes the rainbow. My close reading of the text “the Rainbow Passage.”. Contemplating the practice of directing. Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Parapraxis: through, beside, beyond. The word "parapraxis" was invented by Sigmund Freud's English translators in the 1930s as a latinate (and therefore official-sounding) replacement for the German term Fehlleistung,. The prefix "para," can mean any number of seemingly contradictory things, including "through," "beside," "beyond," and "contrary to." It is this last meaning Freud's translators had in mind when they coined the term - a...

Parapraxis: January 2011
http://joybrookefairfield.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Contemplating the practice of directing. Thursday, January 27, 2011. Tiny Imaginary Play #2. A bright world full of light and sand. A young woman in white, veiled, spins slowly. She looks like an angel or a prophet or a nun or the virgin Mary or the sacred whore Magdalene or a particularly poised belly-dancer or the Western fantasy of a mystic Hindu saint. She starts to sing, at first so quietly you can barely hear her. No words, just wails and warbles. She turns around in the space, listening intently.

Parapraxis: Performance Notion: Malinowski’s Diary
http://joybrookefairfield.blogspot.com/2011/04/performance-notion-malinowskis-diary.html
Contemplating the practice of directing. Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Performance Notion: Malinowski’s Diary. I used to keep my ideas for future devised pieces hidden safe in a little black notebook, scrawled in big excited letters, waiting for the day when I had the time and resources to manifest them. Not sure where that book is today, and given that we live in an age of over-sharing, I’ll record them here. Feel free to steal them if they appeal to you. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Contemplating the practice of directing. Thursday, October 28, 2010. Directing Shadows:" Artaud's Dreams. I re-read Artaud last week. I'm always inspired by his vision for what theatre could be. Here are a few snippets, along with images of his own artwork:. We must believe in a sense of life renewed by the theater, a sense of life in which man fearlessly makes himself master of what does not yet exist, and brings it into being."( The Theatre and its Double. The true purpose of the theatre is to create M...

Parapraxis: November 2010
http://joybrookefairfield.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Contemplating the practice of directing. Monday, November 29, 2010. The Glance of Lot's Wife. Looking back is dangerous. In Greek mythology, the musician Orpheus sings open the gates of hell to save his wife Eurydice, only to kill her again, accidentally, by looking back at her before she'd made it back to the land of the living. Genesis 19 tells us that, after escaping Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot's (nameless) wife "looked back at the calamity of the city" and was turned into a pillar of salt. If I were to t...
