January | 2008 | PhD Procrastinating

https://phdprocrastinating.wordpress.com/2008/01

An itinerant grad student. Good news. . .in Kashmir? January 30, 2008. Just before I took off for Italy, I blogged about some interesting statements. By the leader of a major, if faltering, Kashmiri insurgent group, the Hizbul Mujahideen – he was making noises about Northern Ireland providing a model. I speculated based on some things I heard that there might be some kind of rapprochment under way between the Hizb and the Indian state. A boycott on upcoming state elections:. January 30, 2008. https://phdprocrastinating.wordpress.com/2009/07/18/delh-icious

An itinerant grad student. 8211; I have eaten a huge amount of reasonably tasty food recently. My life basically consisted this past week of waking up, ordering tea and fruit, making a couple calls, writing/playing on my computer, meeting someone for coffee or lunch, taking a nap, and eating some more. Not too shabby; I could get used to this. 8211; In part guided by an extremely literary, sweaty, random British tourist in a bookshop, I have prepared myself to kill time in Kashmir with Anna Karenina.

Back in town | PhD Procrastinating

https://phdprocrastinating.wordpress.com/2009/07/19/back-in-town

An itinerant grad student. Well I’m in Srinagar, and so far so good. It’s always amazing how much security there is around the airport, but it was busy and traffic-y; tons of Indians coming in for tourism and a religious pilgrimage. My guesthouse is pleasant and helpful (and has reasonable-speed wifi! The mosque around the corner:. This is the HQ of one faction of the main separatist faction:. This entry was posted on Sunday, July 19th, 2009 at 7:00 am and is filed under India. From your own site. You ar...

What Militarization Means | PhD Procrastinating

https://phdprocrastinating.wordpress.com/2009/07/24/what-militarization-means

An itinerant grad student. Some shots showing this interweaving of security and daily life. This is the just the tip of the iceberg, but I didn’t feel comfortable taking overly-direct photos of security installations. It’s actually become significantly less militarized over the past 5 years, which really tells you something. Police amongst the rickshaws:. CRPF camp entryway, on the main MA Road:. Rather lethargic police stroll across a bridge, accompanied by riot shield:. Feed You can leave a response.

Gondola-izing | PhD Procrastinating

https://phdprocrastinating.wordpress.com/2009/07/26/gondola-izing

An itinerant grad student. So I took a decidedly tourist half-day trip to the hill resort of Gulmarg, which boasts, among other things, a mini-golf course, an actual golf course, the Indian High Altitude Warfare School, Asia’s highest gondola, and a past with some significant militancy. I took numerous photos, which can be found here. Along with my other Kashmir photos. Here I’ll just highlight some thoughts on the trip, which was mainly valuable in getting me out of Srinagar. From your own site. You are...

Dinner Bell: Back to Boston

http://dinner-bell.blogspot.com/2008/04/back-to-boston.html

A diary of deliciousness. Tuesday, April 29, 2008. In the last few weeks before my sublet ran out, I took advantage of having the kitchen and made some pretty good meals. 2 This was followed, however, by one of the best meals I've cooked in a long time. Rum braised beef short rib with roasted butternut squash. I have been meaning to do a big long, ranty post about how much I hate butternut squash. With all the tremendous, delicious diversity. That's not nice :(. April 29, 2008 at 8:38:00 PM EST. But I'm ...

http://dinner-bell.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

A diary of deliciousness. Friday, June 13, 2008. 1 One of Asunción's must visit restaurants is Bar San Roque. It is actually Asuncion's oldest restaurant and has been open more than 100 years. We (re)discovered it when I was little and my sister. 2 We also went to a german festival at the local German club. After living in northeast Wisconsin for four years during college, I can't say I was impressed with the food. But it was cool to see them making split pea soup in these huge cauldrons. The pictures he...

Dinner Bell: Wok's New, Pussycat?

http://dinner-bell.blogspot.com/2008/08/woks-new-pussycat.html

A diary of deliciousness. Thursday, August 28, 2008. Wok's New, Pussycat? 1 First, I tried to make smoky hot chicken stir-fried with dried red chillies and green garlic chives. 2 My second attempt was soy braised baby bock choi with sausage. They sell little dried pork sausages at the agroshopping that I think make a pretty good stand in for chinese sausage. A crucial and unsubstitutable ingredient in traditional Paraguayan cooking, is also from a sugar-cane farmer whose wife makes cheese from their fami...

http://dinner-bell.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

A diary of deliciousness. Thursday, September 18, 2008. Breaking the food bank. I've vowed to better appreciate all of the fresh, organic, and affordable produce that is available in Paraguay. Part of it is, of course, the fact that my dollars are worth more than guaraníes. Worth knowing, because this is what Paraguayans will give up if they let the countryside get bulldozed and covered by soybean plantations. At any rate, I decided we better eat up while we are in Paraguay, because. 1 Salad of lima.

A diary of deliciousness. Sunday, November 18, 2007. 7 An extremely improvised soup au pistou. I made this to use up the last of the zucchini and the pesto. It was definitely not bad given how I unplanned it was and that it was missing some of the principle ingredients. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I now have something like my own kitchen, be it a . Dinner Bell: Omnivore's Hundred

http://dinner-bell.blogspot.com/2008/08/omnivores-hundred.html

A diary of deliciousness. Monday, August 25, 2008. So, a British food blogger at Very Good Taste. Has linked to wikipedia for the more obscure entries if you want more explanation. At any rate, here it goes. I would actually replace this with elk on my 100. I had elk once in vermont and once in Montreal and both times it was really delicious). 4 Steak tartare (not yet, but I'm now very fond of beef carpaccio, so I'm willing to give it a shot). 5 Crocodile (I've had Aligator but not croc). Not a big fan).

A diary of deliciousness. Friday, May 9, 2008. El hormiguero del mundo. 1 Heirloom Tomato Salad with China Rose Radishes and Avocado. 2 Falafel with Tahini. This was a bit of a chore, but well worth it. There is an excellent brand of pita bread here, which (when reheated) is soft inside and crispy and chewy on the outside. I used NYtimes food writer Mark Bittman's recipe. 6 Yogurt cheese with fresh herbs and olive oil. This was an elegant light dinner with some pita bread and the salad pictured below...
