What’s the Use | Old Burningbird Weblog
http://weblog.burningbird.net/archives/2005/05/31/whats-the-use
Here we go again. What’s the Use. Last week I had an email from a person writing an anger management manual, who wanted permission to quote my old. About using anger as a weapon against helplessness. As serendipity would have it, Joel Spolsky of Joel on Software just released his list of book recommendations for programmers and it featured Seligman’s book on the subject. Where are the women who write the articles, and the books? Are there none of us left? Not at the new O’Reilly weblog. I wrote in an ema...

Digital sharecropping | ROUGH TYPE
http://www.roughtype.com/archives/2006/12/sharecropping_t.php
A while back I wrote. That Web 2.0, by putting the means of production into the hands of the masses but withholding from those same masses any ownership over the product of their work, provides an incredibly efficient mechanism to harvest the economic value of the free labor provided by the very many and concentrate it into the hands of the very few. Richard MacManus’s new analysis. More on this subject:. The sharecroppers’ tools. This entry was posted in Digital Sharecropping. December 19, 2006. Decembe...

Actually Existing: The cold in our eyes
http://existingactually.blogspot.com/2006/08/cold-in-our-eyes.html
This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Friday, August 04, 2006. The cold in our eyes. Is it anti-semitic to criticise Israel? Is it anti-semitic to criticise Zionism? Is it anti-semitic, even, to oppose. Zionism - to believe that the state of Israel (as established in 1948) was a thoroughly bad idea which should be replaced by something better? Sir Oswald, would you care to comment? Had developed a similar argument). Since Fascists are primarily concerned with buildi...

Actually Existing: Never be your woman
http://existingactually.blogspot.com/2006/11/never-be-your-woman.html
This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Friday, November 24, 2006. Never be your woman. Today the newspapers report. That sexual harassment of teachers and pupils in schools is widespread, and that girls are starting to accept sexist language as the norm . Have I simply dragged some value set from the distant past, which I want to see imposed upon this new social avant garde? The horror, the horror. I am not a Hegelian. oh all right then, I'm a recovering. Take us back fo...

Actually Existing: No secrets left to conceal
http://existingactually.blogspot.com/2006/12/no-secrets-left-to-conceal.html
This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Thursday, December 21, 2006. No secrets left to conceal. Dr Phil Edwards is the national press officer of the BNP. And, by the way, Dr Phil Edwards isn't his real name. It is Stuart Russell. When asked, Dr Edwards/Russell tetchily says he uses a pseudonym for 'personal reasons' and it's none of my business why. He is not unusual among his cohorts. Several have used names other than their own for 'personal reasons'. The Doc and his m...

This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Monday, December 11, 2006. The most cruel has passed. Newsflash. General Augusto Pinochet of Chile has just died. His condition is described as 'satisfactory'. Like Rob (and Ellis. Y deja que el sol alumbre. Por todos los rincones de tu casa. Nuestra vida no ha sido hecha. Para rodearla de sombras y tristezas. María ya ves,. No basta nacer, crecer, amar,. Para encontrar la felicidad. Pasó lo más cruel,. Y tus manos de miel. And your...

Actually Existing: Eat y'self fitter
http://existingactually.blogspot.com/2007/02/eat-yself-fitter.html
This blog is now closed. It isn't really anywhere - it's somewhere else. Monday, February 12, 2007. Inconsequentially: it occurred to me the other day that I'm firmly convinced that some kinds of food and drink are good for you. In most cases this belief doesn't appear to have any rational basis - although in some cases it's probably based on experience, which is almost as good. Anyone else have a similar list at the back of their mind, or is it just me? Those clear broth ones. They're good for you&#...

What I wrote: Business, community, discipline
http://what-i-wrote.blogspot.com/2006/11/business-community-discipline.html
Before I had a blog. Wednesday, November 08, 2006. Business, community, discipline. Business, Community, Discipline: the Strange Triumph of New Labour. Written 12th May 1997; not published. I didn't vote Labour on May 1st. At my first general election in 1979 I voted Liberal, an early tactical voter in Conservative Croydon South. I found out afterwards that the Labour candidate had lost his deposit: every vote did count after all. Ever since then I'd voted Labour at every opportunity.

What I wrote: In Godzilla's footprint
http://what-i-wrote.blogspot.com/2006/11/in-godzillas-footprint.html
Before I had a blog. Friday, November 10, 2006. E-Pro magazine, March 2003. Monster movies never give you a good view of the monster until halfway through. Representing Godzilla through one enormous footprint — or even one enormous foot — is a good way of building up suspense. It’s also realistic: if Godzilla came to town, one scaly foot would be all that most people ever saw. The first trend is standardization. The second trend is automation. The third trend is externalization of costs.

Before I had a blog. Monday, November 20, 2006. Remembering Judy Garland [1]. Two announcements. Firstly, this is the last post here. I've merged this blog with a couple of others (it's a long story) and moved to Wordpress; the result is The Gaping Silence. Hie thee over there, soon as you like. Secondly, this very post can be found (without this bit, obviously) in this book:. Put the whole thing together in a week flat, which is frankly amazing. Go on, buy one. Buy two, why don't you. See you over there.
