Various stuff, mostly boring. Announcing our new startup — Phile. For those people who have been following me since the days when I used to keep this blog up to date… I thought you might want to know that I’ve started a new startup called Phile, which launched a public beta earlier today. There are lots of ways to think about Phile, but in many ways, it’s a synthesis of everything I learned in working on Dreamweaver, Contribute, Flex, and other products during my tenure at Adobe and Macromedia. Phile ...

Various stuff, mostly boring. Last night, jean and I went to Aquavit in Manhattan. The food was phenomenal. The service was great. The decor was good. So why was the place more than half empty at 9pm on a friday night? Is it the snobbish joy of being “in”? The whole experience left us shaking our heads wondering what went wrong. Are new yorkers just over the herring and lingonberries? Is itthe lack of foam and xanthan gum? Was it worth it? I’ve been blocked by Google! And what to do about it). A few week...

Various stuff, mostly boring. Objective C, readability, and language design. For the last several months, I’ve been teaching myself Objective C and Cocoa. On the plus side, the framework is well designed. It’s the Objective C syntax that still has me tearing my hair out. The biggest difference between Objective C and C /Java/C#/ActionScript is the syntax for sending messages to objects. Instead of using dots or arrows, you use square brackets:. NSRect screenRect = [ [myView window] screen] frame]. Some l...

Various stuff, mostly boring. Safari 4 First Thoughts. Just checked out the Safari 4 beta. Overall, it looks promising. I’m curious to know how they accomplished this (JIT compiler? But I’m happy it’s here. More and more, client-side JavaScript is becoming something that can do heavy lifting. The weird tab/title bar doesn’t appeal to me, but I can see its value. To me, the window needs to feel like it’s a container, and the tabs just screw that up for me. But the space savings is nice. Back in 97, I was ...

Various stuff, mostly boring. Why I’m not excited about the Higgs boson. A friend at work ( @obviouscorp. Asked me why the Higgs boson was such a big deal. And as nearly as I can tell, the answer is “It’s not.”. Now don’t get me wrong. I think the discovery of a particle we have been hunting down for 50 years is a big deal. But I’m still not excited. Different kinds of mass. The confusing molasses analogy. Many science writers talk about the Higgs field giving mass to particles by “slowing them dow...

Various stuff, mostly boring. Apple vs. Lean Startups. Recently, Andrew Chen has been mulling over the differences between Apple’s approach to product design and (a) the typical corporate approach and (b) the “lean startups” approach. In a recent post,. He proposed the idea of a “minimal desirable product” to try to blend Apple’s approach and the lean startups approach. I kind of agree with him, but his formulation makes my head hurt. Or minimally kick ass? Probably. Would it have been as successful?

Various stuff, mostly boring. Need beta testers for a new iPhone app. Hi folks. Well, it’s time for me to break my radio silence. I’ve been away from Adobe for a year, and I’ve now worked on three projects since then. The first project was a. Project. The kind that you end up trying to build a startup around. I’m still interested in getting back to that project at some point, and I’m not ready to talk about it yet. The second one was a smallish. The third project is a tiny. So now we need beta testers.

Various stuff, mostly boring. ITunes store usability FAIL! Earlier today, we submitted v1.1 of Notespark to the iTunes store, using iTunes Connect, which is the web UI that application authors use to access the App Store. Apple is the design expert, right? So this UI has got to be, like, awesome, right? Now take a look at this screen. What do you think happens when you follow these steps:. Click on “edit information” underneath the 1.1 version of Notespark. Late update] Yes, the app is back. Whew! In oth...
