Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan

Saturday, December 11, 2010. About 3 weeks ago my infrastructure colleagues threw a going away party for our consultant's Project Manager who resigned, and me. There were some very nice speeches, a slaughterhouse of meat and an adequate amount of booze. Everybody had a good time. Here are Ntsane, my counterpart, and I. We've become good friends over the last year, but I'm sure he'll come visit the states sometime soon. This picture is of the sanitation portion of the project. This mason is building t...

Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan: Mounting the Panels

http://phillipyoungren.blogspot.com/2010/07/mounting-panels.html

Tuesday, July 20, 2010. This next picture is just of the first two panels that we installed the night I arrived. I was happy working at night because it meant that we weren't going to get shocked wiring up those panels. When the boys did arrive, we started work right away. We quickly had the next two panels in place and I wanted to make sure we had some documentation of the installation. I handed down my camera to one of the boys who was helping and asked, "Have you ever used a camera before.". This is t...

Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan: March 2010

http://phillipyoungren.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Life in Maseru doesn't provide the same level of comedic intrigue as life in the village. That's just fact. However, there are some benefits. I pass a supermarket on my way home from work that has 2-ply toilet paper. Electricity and indoor plumbing. Thanks for keeping up with me everybody, and please leave me a comment so I know you're all still alive. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan. Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan: August 2009

http://phillipyoungren.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Saturday, August 15, 2009. Inside the beehive hut in Swaziland. Melody hunting some impalabok for breakfast. Wildlife viewing over an egg scramble. A candle mason at Swazi Candles. Outside the beehive hut. Hippo Lake in the background. Reading on the 7 hour bus ride to Tofu. Our villa on the beach. Water taxi to Katembe Island. Fishing boats after the catch. After lunch pose on Katembe Island in Maputo Harbor. 8220;We have a reservation for a double,” I say. 8220;Do you have a double? 8221; I ask again.

Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan: October 2010

http://phillipyoungren.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 17, 2010. Last weekend a number of PCVs and I went to help out at World Habitat Day. A former Peace Corps Volunteer from here in Lesotho (Lorian) finished her service in May or so and took a position with Habitat for Humanity Lesotho. We caught a ride out there around 8:30, stopped for some snacks and showed up in the village around 10. These horses had some great burlap sack capes on. They looked like they were the kings of the village. The village women again. There was a family fro...

Lesotho: An Island Off of Japan: February 2010

http://phillipyoungren.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 17, 2010. I know, I need to work on my update frequency. Things are going well on the day-to-day level. Work has been busy but not so demanding that I lose touch with other projects. There have been a few points of excitement over the last few weeks outside of work. Another interesting thing has been being the center of a marketing campaign (I use that very lightly) for MCC/MCA/Peace Corps. I’m in the latest MCC newsletter ( CLICK. One last thing. Another volunteer and I had an id...

Everywhere is somewhere we must go. In this case, we're headed north. Monday, April 13, 2009. Alas, I Still Love Washington (State). A lot of plans are still up in the air, but one hope I have in the near future is to begin studying in University. I desire to take the time to make a prayerful decision on where I can best pursue the seeds and ideas God has dropped in my heart. As specifics become clear I hope to keep you updated. Everywhere is somewhere we must go. In this case, we're headed north. Sunday, November 23, 2008. We Are People But He is God. I write to you all from a drizzly and cloud covered Kona. The weather here is reminding me of home. Those of you in beautiful Washington State may already be at odds with the blustery weather conditions, but strangely enough, I often find myself missing those blustery weather conditions. A lot of times, I feel a bit overwhelmed with the amount of coordination that is necessary for...

The Actor/Composer's Notebook: In Other News...

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2009/07/in-other-news.html

Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Michael Jackson is still dead. But just in case you weren't sure, feel free to click on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and your local news network. They're keeping tabs on him. Don't you worry. I know this isn't going to be a popular post (2 out of the 6 people that read this may even comment in outrage), but I thought the memorial service at the Staples Center was bizarre, indulgent, and more than anything.incredibly disingenuous. There I said it. Why couldn't they mourn him on their own?

The Actor/Composer's Notebook: August 2009

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 27, 2009. I Get No Kick On a Plane. I'm usually very productive on planes. I read books. I do work on my laptop. I compose, I edit, I write, I play games. Or else I sleep. Now, many airlines are offering WIFI on your flight. For example, Delta. Which I am currently on. In mid-air. Blogging. I'm heading first to JFK and then on to Edinburgh. What amounts to something like 20 hours of air travel. Having wifi on a plane is awesome, and my only question is - what took them so long? Shaking m...

The Actor/Composer's Notebook: Health of a Nation

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2009/08/health-of-nation.html

Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Health of a Nation. Shaking my head at this health care "debate.". It amazes me the things that people honestly believe will be allowed to happen in this country. Death Panels? Forced Health Care Coverage? Okay, so that last one will happen.I always laugh when people get upset about it, though. "You're going to MAKE me pay for Health Coverage? That's usually such a liberal idea. The Free-market," they cried, "will always prevail! As they waved their real-America flags. In La Cro...

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Up, Up, and Away. This year of my life, I made a promise. To myself that I would concentrate on my writing. I've certainly tried to do that, and I have thus far enjoyed some success. For over a year now, my collaborator, Ryan Scott Oliver. And I have been working non-stop. Read: with many, many stops) on a new musical called Darling. This January, Darling will receive a fully-produced reading at Pace University. Alex Brightman sings "Lost Boy" from DARLING. The Actor/Composer's Notebook: February 2009

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 23, 2009. Oscar Night (Part Two). Once again the Oscars have come and gone. As I've said before, I'm a huge Oscar fan. There's very little they can do that will upset me. But this year managed to pull it off. I really did not like the broadcast this year - worst ever that I've seen, in fact. And those musical numbers. Oh my god. What was Baz Luhrman THINKING! Not everything needs to be a medley, people. Really! All of whom I picked to win. Slumdog seemed to sweep most of its categori...

The Actor/Composer's Notebook: December 2008

http://btryback.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 25, 2008. The Curious Case of Forest Gump.er.Benjamin Button. I love really good ideas. I love them the first time someone does them. It's always best the first time. Benjamin Button is a really good idea. I think ultimately we can credit Mark Twain with that (who gave the idea to F. Scott Fitzgerald, who then passed it along to Eric Roth, who subsequently kept it to himself and wrote The Curious Case of Benjamin Button instead.). Forest Gump was a GOOD idea! Oh, and did I mention it's...

San Francisco Bay Area Photographer. 8220;Do work that feed your soul, not your ego ”. There’s something about the redwoods that feed my soul. I think it’s the quiet. It’s the lack of cell phone reception. There are no outlets for your laptop. No wifi. It’s just you and the woods. And the mountains. And the clouds. And the sunset. Here are some photos I made with my friend Rebecca. May they inspire you to take a moment to seek out your own quiet place. Refer to FB Message convo :) Reply.
