Philly Bird Nerd : Where Have I Been?
http://www.phillybirdnerd.net/2015/07/where-have-i-been.html
Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Where Have I Been? Sorry for the gap in posts. It has been a tough month. Our beloved Roxy succumbed to stomach cancer suddenly. The symptoms began before I left for Europe but the diagnosis wasn't made until I returned. Needless to say, I took a break from birding to focus on her care and subsequent death. Sorry to be a bummer but that's what has been going on. It was amazing how many birds we...
Philly Bird Nerd : Damn You Harvey!
http://www.phillybirdnerd.net/2015/07/damn-you-harvey.html
Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Sunday, July 26, 2015. Summer is typically a slow time of year for birding. It also happens to be when my birthday falls. Both of those things have lead me to fall into a trap set by my friend Harvey. He didn't intend on setting the trap but he set it anyway. Now I'm "bugging" with him. What's bugging? Here is the same dragonfly closer. You can still see the beige lighthouse. Mean looking sucker huh? This one landed ...
Philly Bird Nerd : November 2014
http://www.phillybirdnerd.net/2014_11_01_archive.html
Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Monday, November 24, 2014. More Florida Follow Up. Another fan favorite at Corkscrew is the Pileated Woodpecker. They come much closer to the trail than they do in other parks. Here is a male hammering away at a cypress. You can tell it's a male by the red mustache. Females only have red on the crest. White Ibis were taking a break from feeding. I caught this one resting on a log. Links to this post. The birds were l...
Philly Bird Nerd : December 2014
http://www.phillybirdnerd.net/2014_12_01_archive.html
Stories, photos and travel logs from my group of. 40-something friends "The Bird Nerds". Wednesday, December 31, 2014. First up - this bird has a gray bib that extends pretty far down the chest. The tail is partially obscured by the wire but it looks kind of notched. Something weird is going on with the front of this bird too. Is it the same as the bird above? Not as much white under the chin either. What about that tail? Is is flat or round or notched? Links to this post. Tuesday, December 30, 2014.
Philly Bird Nerd : October 2014

It was a good experience for me and glad that I was able to get Biggie to go along too. Links to this post. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. A Thief Among Us. Bald Eagle - 2nd Year. The "oohs and aahs" turned to "woahs and wows" when the eagle started to chase an Osprey. Look at the size difference between the 2 birds. (The eagle is the big one :-). Bald Eagle chasing Osprey.

Recycled Photons: Tern on the Half Shell
https://recycledphotons.blogspot.com/2015/07/tern-on-half-shell.html
Friday, July 31, 2015. Tern on the Half Shell. There were two obvious areas on the beach. One as seen above littered with shells. And another zone with almost no shells. I figured that it had to do with the tide line and wave action. It seems there is a gentleman that visits the beach and collects the shells. He is a good neighbor to the birds and does not collect them from the breeding area. And he is apparently very thorough in his collecting. Ever enjoy clams casino? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Recycled Photons: Bye Bye Birdie ...
https://recycledphotons.blogspot.com/2015/07/bye-bye-birdie.html
Sunday, July 26, 2015. Bye Bye Birdie . My friend Laura, of Somewhere in NJ. Fame, makes her home in Georgia these days. But for the past two summers the lure of the Jersey Shore has been too strong to resist. So she has gotten a summer gig both years with the NJ Department of Fish and Wildlife. To go to the beach. To look at birds. Let that sink in a moment. She gets paid to go to the beach and look at birds. All summer long. Which she did for free when she lived here in NJ. Glad I got to show you Skimm...
Recycled Photons: Baby Turkeys
https://recycledphotons.blogspot.com/2015/08/baby-turkeys.html
Sunday, August 2, 2015. The other morning while out feeding the fish something large flew by, toward the back of the yard. "What was that? I thought. Although I spotted the bird running away after landing, I was still confused as to what it might be. The size was all wrong. But after the initial confusion (perhaps aided by the fact I'd not yet had any coffee? I went out the next morning, this time with camera, but the only garden visitor was a bunny.
