armchair investigations: variables are not directly referential

http://armchair7.blogspot.com/2011/12/variables-are-not-directly-referential.html

Monday, December 12, 2011. Variables are not directly referential. Here is an argument that variables are not directly referential:. 1) A term t. Is directly referential iff the semantic content of t. Is the designatum of t. 2) The semantic content of a term t. Iff for every linguistic environment E. The semantic content that t. 3) Thus, a term t. Is directly referential iff for every linguistic environment E. The semantic content that t. Is the designatum of t. Saturday, June 04, 2011. I could have been Barack Obama. 1) My parents could have named me "Barack Obama". 2) If my parents had named me "Barack Obama", I would have been a Barack Obama. 3) Necessarily, every Barack Obama is identical to someone who is Barack Obama. 4) Therefore, I could have been Barack Obama. 31) If I had been a Barack Obama, I would have been identical to someone who is Barack Obama. 32) If I had been identical to someone who is Barack Obama, I would have been Barack Obama. 2) Isnt th...

armchair investigations: Negation as an interpretation shifting operator

http://armchair7.blogspot.com/2011/03/negation-as-interpretation-shifting.html

Monday, March 28, 2011. Negation as an interpretation shifting operator. In propositional logic a formula φ. Of language L is only true (1) or false (0) relative to an interpretation M. The semantics of the negation symbol is usually given as follows:. M = 1 iff [ φ. M = 1 iff [ φ. M* = 1, where M* is just like M except it assigns 1 - M( φ. As far as I can tell, that is a perfectly fine semantics for negation in propositional logic. What do you mean when you say that M* is just like M except wrt phi?

armchair investigations: syntax for definitions

http://armchair7.blogspot.com/2011/04/syntax-for-definitions.html

Thursday, April 14, 2011. How should one write a definition? The mathematician Douglas West ( The Grammar According to West. Provides the following advice:. Words being defined should be distinguished by italics (or perhaps boldface in a textbook context). When italics are used to indicate a word being defined, it is unnecessary to use "called" or "said to be"; the use of italics announces that this is the term being defined and replaces these words. Many definitions are phrased as "An object has property.

armchair investigations: formulating a donkey sentence in first-order logic

http://armchair7.blogspot.com/2011/04/formulating-donkey-sentence-in-first.html

Friday, April 29, 2011. Formulating a donkey sentence in first-order logic. Here is a standard donkey sentence:. 1) Every farmer that owns a donkey beats it. It is often said that such sentences cannot be formulated in the language of first-order logic. There is a formulation in first-order logic that gets the correct truth conditions but it differs radically from the surface structure of (1)- -most significantly it interprets the indefinite article as a universal quantifier. What's wrong with this?

Philosophical11 | So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. – Romans 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17. Average Atheist Trivializes Sin and Hell. September 26, 2012. Hello Average Atheist, I read your post My Problem with Hell. Do you want to stay there or try to run and help your daughter? September 24, 2012. I stole this from a comment by Occam’s Blog. 2) Christianity is plausible and accepted by a large number of intelligent people. 3) Accepting Christianity would result in enormous benefits if Christianity is true. To Think Or Not To Think. Saturday, February 12, 2011. The No Challenge Theory (Misunderstanding of Science). The No Challenge Theory. The no challenge theory is a projection of pride onto scientist by creationist. Philosophicalagnostic's Weblog | Just another WordPress.com weblog

124; Comments RSS. Introduction…and a little TV watching. Posted on November 15, 2007. This blog is dedicated to the discussion of science, religion and politics, especially where they intersect in American life. As a self-professed philosophical agnostic (meaning I have thought it through, and I simply can’t believe any human being has the knowledge or could ever have the knowledge to proclaim with certainty what, if anything, lies beyond the universe), I can’t believe. But that is just my personal guess.
