Philosophical Classics 2009

Monday, February 15, 2010. This is a post just looking for (and giving a few) ideas regarding the class. Would anyone be interested in having a sort of after school (during the week, preferably) movie night? For example, it seems like nobody (including me) has seen Rear Window. A classic Hitchcock film, so perhaps we could have a Hitchcock night, or we could celebrate the work of an individual studio or director or film franchise. I'd love to know everyone's thoughts on this. Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

Philosophical Classics 2009: Pamphilus Has the Last Word

http://philosophicalclassics2009.blogspot.com/2009/12/pamphilus-has-last-word.html

Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Pamphilus Has the Last Word. Pamphilus concludes at the end of the Dialogues. Philo's principles are more probable than Demea's, but those of Cleanthes approach still nearer to the truth" (89). What are we to make of this observation? Is this supposed to be the judgment of Hume? Is this supposed to be ironic in some way? Does this statement tell us anything about the arguments - or more about Pamphilus? Sunday, November 15, 2009. Skepticism vs. Idealism: are they so different? Idealism rejects the material existence of objects, saying everything resides in the mind, while skepticism questions existence entirely. How different is Berkeley's line of logic from that of a skeptic? Is the distinction just one of convenience? Friday, November 13, 2009. Macbeth's Dagger and Other Illusions. How successful is Philonous' response? Sunday, November 8, 2009. If so, how valuable is this argument? Much Ado About A M...

Philosophical Classics 2009: October 2009

http://philosophicalclassics2009.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 29, 2009. Are We Wired for Religion? According to some people, there seems to be a biological imperative for we as humans to search for purpose in a world largely devoid of meaning. One such person's work is linked here http:/ rationalargumentator.com/issue196/telosdrive.html. Why is it that every single human culture in history had some form of religion? Is there an easy, scientific explanation to this phenomenon? Is religion essential to humanity? Wednesday, October 28, 2009. Is knowl...

The Chasm

I attempt to overcome the chasm, the divide, between many philosophical traditions. Maintaining traditions that don't talk to any other traditions makes thinking stale. Saturday, June 15, 2013. Barzun on William James. I am reading some of Jacque Barzun on understanding and reading William James. I found this passage rather unique:. Sunday, June 9, 2013. Caputo and the End of Ethics. Caputo has a book, Against Ethics,. That deals with the same thesis in the Blackwell Guide to Ethical Theory;. I will sugg...

Philosophical Classics 2010

Thursday, November 18, 2010. Mill famously argues in Chapter V of. That a contract of voluntary slavery should be null and void. For Mill, we have no right to surrender our liberty. He argues "But by selling himself for a slave, he abdicates his libverty; he forgoes any future use of it beyond the single act. He therefore defeats, in his own case, the very purpose which is justification of allowing him to dispose of himself"(101). Is Mill correct? Why can't I surrender my liberty? No Man is an Island".
