Sunday, 22 July 2012. On Reading by Andre Kertesz. The word that came to my mind, as I looked through the photographs in this wonderful little book, kindly loaned to me by Catherine Banks, a fellow student, was transformative, so I was interested to find that in the short introduction that I read, after I had looked and studied the three score and more reproduction photographs, the word “transformative” as a key descriptor in the analysis provided. Friday, 20 July 2012. So both exhibits could have been f...

Dialogs on Photography: Frame 9
http://dialogsonphotography.blogspot.com/2013/07/frame-9_24.html
Wednesday, July 24, 2013. When should you just enjoy the moment as opposed to taking a picture of it? We have all become Isherwood’s human camera—passively recording everything we see, saving the images to be looked at later. I wonder if we shoot pictures for enjoyment, to remember what we’ve done and where we’ve been, or as a compulsion, a way to own the experience, or conversely, perhaps a way to evade it. What do you bring home: proof of ownership, or firsthand memories of a life lived? Http:/ www....

Dialogs on Photography: April 2013
http://dialogsonphotography.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 26, 2013. How many photos have been sent to you from a friend that you couldn’t resist passing on to someone else? Perhaps a picture captured something funny, or seemed to be the right image at the right time to express a feeling. By creating the Web, which is a free and open marketplace, we have knocked loose the protections f...

Craig's thoughts on photography. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Michael Kenna - Black and White vs Color Photography. Why Black and White? Having my studio at The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia for the past 14 years has provided a unique public venue for my work. One of the questions I am frequently asked is "why black and white and not color? As most people know, I only work in black and white and have never been interested in working in color . but why? Beyond the F-Stop: An Art Survey
http://beyondthefstop.blogspot.com/2013/07/an-art-survey.html
Craig's thoughts on photography. Friday, July 5, 2013. Jay Leno, Bill Mahr and CNN have all at one time or another conducted surveys out in the street of typical Americans. They ask to name the Secretary of State, Vice President or the Governor of their home state. Much to my amazement, the vast majority of people surveyed don't have a clue . AMAZING! What does this say about the public's knowledge of art? Do we only care about the Kim Kardashian, Beyonce and Duck Dynasty . I guess so!

Take a minute and read this email I recently received from Kara, a visitor to my studio in The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia . I'm sincerely touched. Craig J. Sterling.
