Capitol Devoured by Fire. For a Second Time. April 25, 1935. In a spectacular blaze which began as Salemites ate dinner, the Oregon State Capitol was destroyed by fire a second time on April 25, 1935. Smoke was discovered coming out of an elevator shaft at about 6:30 that evening; the fire had apparently started in the basement of the 59-year-old statehouse. 129 Commercial Street NE. Capital National Bank Building. 1880/1892 (historic remodeling); 1950 (first floor remodeling). 073W27AB3500; Salem Addition, from Lot 3, Block 48. Salem, OR 97308. The first major tenant of the building was Capital National Bank, who occupied the building until the 1920s. In 1967 Nancy Gormsen, the granddaughter of Robert S. Wallace, one of the early organizers and directors of the Capital National Bank, returned to open her business in this building.
