Afraid to be Karen. Karen people have experienced so much oppression and suffering that it has damaged our self esteem and our identity. When we leave our homes we are afraid to wear our traditional clothes and speak our language. When they sing they make people so happy. The Karen Student Network Group (KSNG) runs many programs for its 5,000 members. We work with Karen students in the refugee camps, inside Burma and around the world. http://photosbysawmoorra.blogspot.com/2008/04/hair.html

Trash Bin Lounge Chair. When children get lice their parents shave their heads. Unfortunately. It happens a lot. This boy wanted to keep a little hair. It's a new style. An innovative arts project for Karen refugees from Burma to describe their lives through photography.

Saw Moor'ra: Karen National Flag

http://photosbysawmoorra.blogspot.com/2008/03/karen-national-flag.html

Our flag represents dignity for all Karen people. Red is for bravery, white is for purity and blue is for loyalty. In the corner there is a "Klo," a sacred Karen drum. We use this drum on special occasions like weddings, New Year's Day and funerals. The Klo is made of metal, tin or gold and only the community leaders strike it. An innovative arts project for Karen refugees from Burma to describe their lives through photography.

Saw Moor'ra: Movies

http://photosbysawmoorra.blogspot.com/2008/04/peaking.html

Since she doesn't have enough money for the movie she watches through a crack in the back wall. An innovative arts project for Karen refugees from Burma to describe their lives through photography. Last year I returned to Karen State to teach art to children. It was difficult because we had few resources. I brought some paints and we painted on paper and wood. It felt good to teach people and encourage them to think creatively.

Photos of Refugee Life Taken by Karen Refugees. I’ve lived in Thailand since 2000. I am happy here because there is electricity, clean water, latrines, and health care. Here I do not have to worry about forced labor. However I also miss home. I miss fresh natural vegetables. I miss the shade of our beautiful trees and the cool springs of Karen State. Most of all I miss my mother and sister. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MY PHOTOS. Saw Say Ler Wah Kyar. Mae La Refugee Camp. A 30-year old non-profit 501c3.

Photos of Refugee Life Taken by Karen Refugees. Unfortunately we were not able to build a new school and I could not continue my education in the village. I came to Thailand where I could finish my primary education in the refugee camp. After I graduated I attended the Further Study Program, the refugee camp’s version of college. I then returned to Karen State to teach. I found a good job in a large school with 130 students and 13 teachers. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MY PHOTOS. Saw Say Ler Wah Kyar. UNSEENWORLD ...

Photos of Refugee Life Taken by Karen Refugees. I was born and raised in refugee camps. When my parents first fled Burma they lived in a refugee camp where they were never allowed to leave. There was no way for them to earn money. They moved to Mae La Oon camp, where 10,000 people live, in hope of finding work. I was born soon after they moved. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MY PHOTOS. Photos of Refugee Life Taken by Karen Refugees. Saw Say Ler Wah Kyar. Everyone should have human rights. In Burma, the government took away our rights to live in peace, earn a living and raise our families. We have little health care, few schools and no safety. Like so many others, I fled Karen State when the military destroyed my village. They killed many people, even those working in the fields. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MY PHOTOS. Saw Say Ler Wah Kyar. Photos of Refugee Life Taken by Karen Refugees. I came to Thailand in 1983 when I was two years old. We fled after my grandfather was killed by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), the official name of the Burmese government. My grandfather was a Baptist missionary and worked with many different ethnic groups throughout Burma. The government killed him because they suspected he was a spy. I have never returned to Burma. My friends are discussing the rising prices of rice. Normally each refugee receives fifteen kilos of rice per month. Now they only give us twelve kilos and soon it may fall to eight kilos. We are very worried because rice is our staple food. Farmers in the hills of Karen State use buffalo horns during the harvest. The horn becomes an instrument when you blow into it. Farmers sound the horn to make poems. When the farmer's neighbors hear the poem they come to help with the harvest. A Place to Relax.

Saw Say Ler Wah Kyar. Mae La refugee camp is very large and contains many neighborhoods. People usually go to whichever seamstress lives closest. I took this photo to show nature's beauty. We've lined up our buckets. When they turn on the water we will fill them. This child is being treated at the mobile clinic. No one expected our conflict to last so long. Now we even have colleges like this one for the children who grow up in the refugee camps. Once the fire is ready, he will cook this snake. Our tradi...
