本鄉在漢墾移民尚未至此開拓前，在當時是個未知地名的蠻荒叢林，只有當時活躍在此區的大肚平埔族據用著對岸之地。 鄭成功治台初期，沒有太多漢人前往南投一帶開墾，並經常有「番人」出草掠奪，影響移墾。當時鄭成功的左武衛劉國軒，率兵攻打「大肚番」，沿著烏溪往深山驅逐，一直打到國姓一帶才停止，並就地紮營墾荒，而將駐營之地，稱之為「國姓埔」，這應該是「國姓」地名的由來。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).

義竹: 義竹鄉

原屬嘉義廳龍蛟潭堡，昔日多種竹有”頭竹圍”與”二竹圍”之稱，因二竹圍與義字在閩南語發音相同，又相傳日軍攻台時，北白川宮能久親王，由八掌溪進攻義竹，經本鄉仁里村林投巷，被藏在樹上一勇士以割鋏割死，激怒日軍焚燬全村，造成慘案。後又有四十九義士之殉難，為紀念其義行，命名為義竹鄉。 1920年義竹庄屬台南州東石郡庄役場，設於義竹529番地。1929年役場遷移現地址。1946年隸屬台南縣，並改為義竹鄉公所。1950年行政區調整，劃分縣制，義竹鄉改隸於 嘉義縣. 訂閱： 張貼留言 (Atom).

支族馬卡道族（Siraya Makatao）聚處，在目前已發現七處考古遺址，可知大約在四百年前到六千五百年前，就有先住民在此住過，而且遍及鄉境內的鳳山丘陵。荷治時期從史籍所載的零星記錄，本地在十六世紀就有漢裔漁民蹤跡，每屆烏魚汛期，就有很多漁戶，來自閩南，從事漁業，並於沿海一帶搭建小茅屋停歇。1661年鄭成功的陸軍中權鎮在小竹里建立「中權莊」進行屯墾。1683年起清治時期，1684年隸屬鳳山庒；嗣後改為小竹橋庒→小竹庒→小竹下里。 1895年起日治，明治34年（1901）隸屬鳳山廳小竹下里林子邊莊；1920年，隸屬高雄州鳳山郡管轄，稱為林園庄，設置庄役場。 戰後，1946年頒佈實施台灣省鄉鎮組織規程，林園庄改為林園鄉至今。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).

相傳清治乾隆年間，閩漳龍溪縣人陳士政等招佃農來台墾拓，初有六家耕稼居於此，遂以「六家佃庄」相稱。嗣後相繼聚居者日眾，對外交往頻繁，而因「家」與「腳」音(台語音)相似，外人誤為「六腳」，成習之後定名為「六腳」，延用至今。 1920年以前設置灣內、六腳佃二區，二區各設役場於灣內、六腳兩部落，隸屬台南府嘉義廳僕仔腳支廳。1920年改制廢區置庄，將灣內、六腳區合併為六腳庄役場，設於六腳隸屬台南縣東石郡朴子街。1921年役場遷於蒜頭，仍稱為六腳庄役場，1946年成立 六腳鄉. 公所，隸屬台南縣東石區；1950年改隸於 嘉義縣. 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
