The term “center stage” means multiple things in the world of theater. First and foremost is it a direction term, used to direct an actor to a specific area on the stage (i.e. the center of the stage). This location holds a position of great prominence and importance, signifying a focal point for the audience to follow the storyline of the play or musical. LIMELIGHT: the Broadway Dream. An early type of stage light in which lime was heated to incandescence, producing brilliant illumination. That part of the stage upon which the limelight is cast, where the most important action is progressing and where the leading player is placed and is the focus of attention. LIMELIGHT is set in the backstage of an old historic theater as the newly departing cast struggles to regain the dream of center stage and relive their few precious minutes in the limelight.
