What do you get when you combine a straw, balloon, five push buttons, and a Picaxe microcontroller? A Trumpet (or piano, or drums, any other instrument you want). By blowing into a straw you slightly inflate a ballon. The balloon goes trhough a hole in a block of wood. When the balloon inflates it breaks a light beam which tells the picaxe to produce a note. The note produced depends on what combination of push buttons you have pressed. This site is for the private use of it's members.

This was one of my favorite projects but because it is 38 inches long and only 1.5 inches wide it is hard to get a good picture of it. Key to the thermometer is the Geneva Mechanism. Which is the green, orange, and pink parts in the picture. As the temperature changes a modified servo motor operates the Geneva Mechanism one step per degree. The mechanism raises or lowers a ball chain. Attached to the chain, two brass finials point to degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius. Ability to subtract coins.

When I learned about the PICAXE series of microcontrollers I knew that this was the one for me. My creative juices started flowing. I would be able to program in Basic. I didn't need any special programming hardware - programmed in your circuit. The editing software is a free download. They're inexpensive with a variety to choose from (8 to 40 pins). Lastly there's a very helpful forum. I wanted to build things which were one of a kind. This site is for the private use of it's members.
