Who were the Picts? 160; . Antiquarians have been intrigued by the ancient Pictish stones for centuries. Some attributed all prehistoric Scottish archaeology to the Picts and developed fanciful notions of them as primitive heathens. Modern historical study of the Picts can be said to have begun with a survey of the stones published by Allen and Anderson as The Early Christian Monuments of Scotland. The Drosten Stone, a fine 9th-century cross-slab at St Vigeans Museum. Class III was defined by Allen and ...

Pictish Stones - Early Carvings
http://www.pictishstones.org.uk/pictishstones/pictishstoneshome/aboutthepicts/carvedstones/carvings.htm
Who were the Picts? The earliest incised symbols are thought to date from the 5th century. Over hundreds of years, Pictish stonemasons refined their techniques, absorbing influences from elsewhere in the British Isles and beyond. Masterpieces such as the St Andrews Sarcophagus, the Dupplin Cross and Sueno’s Stone were created from the late 8th century onwards. An artistic progression over time may be assumed, however, dating of sculptures on art-historical grounds cannot produce precise dates.

Hilton of Cadboll Stone. The magnificent Pictish cross-slab from Hilton of Cadboll in Easter Ross, carved between 700 and 800 AD, stood on land now owned by the Glenmorangie company. It is on display as the centre-piece to the Early People gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. At some point the slab broke away from its base, and its Pictish cross-face was chipped off. Then before AD 1676 this face was re-carved as an (unused! Headstone for Alexander Duff and his 3 wives. A job larger than one person.
