Deception Pass Bridge on hwy 20 affords a unique view of Pigeon Guillemots. Park on Canoe Island and walk toward Fidalgo Island on the east side of the bridge. Hundreds of Pigeon Guillemots nest in the rocky cliffs. On a clear day you can look down on the birds and see them fly’ underwater. They use their wings to propel themselves through the water. Trained volunteers are key to gathering the core of our research data. Each spring we recruit new volunteers. A one-evening training session and an in-the-field orientation are required for new volunteers. I watched an osprey soar and circle lazily above our bluff. Wings unmoving, it floated in and out of the noonday sun with white wing patches appearing translucent against the deep blue backdrop of sky.
