Hard facing (in the context of our workshop) is a metalworking process where a harder or tougher material is applied via a molten pool to a base metal for the purpose of increasing wear resistance on new components, or reclaiming a worn component in a high wear application. Generally tempering is a heat treatment technique applied to ferrous alloys, such as steel or cast iron, to achieve greater toughness by decreasing the hardness of the alloy. The reduction in hardness is usually accompanied by an increase in ductility, thereby decreasing the brittleness of the metal. Tempering is accomplished by controlled heating of the work-piece to a specific temperature or temperatures for a specific period of time or times prior to controlled cooling. A widely used process for the surface and through hardening of medium and high carbon steels and alloy steels. As stated earlier, this operation is most commonly used with medium to high carbon and carbon alloy steels. Many mechanical parts are subjected to surface treatments before use, in order to improve wear resistance and/or increase tensile strength.
