Exploring the 90 neighborhoods of pittsburgh. Arlington is a neighborhood located in Pittsburgh’s hilltop. The neighborhood is mainly residential, with Arlington Ave. acting as a commercial strip along the neighborhood’s northern border. The housing stock is varied with older brick homes sidled up next to newer frame houses. Mainly laid out on a loose grid, most of the streets rise and sink dramatically along steep hills. Exploring the 90 neighborhoods of pittsburgh. Troy Hill is a long, narrow neighborhood that mostly sits on a hill overlooking the Allegheny River. The southern portion of the neighborhood lies alongside the river and is mainly industrial space and the old Heinz factory (and adjoining trendy lofts.) Up on the hill, the neighborhood is composed of brick and frame rowhouses that surround a quiet main street area. Parks, churches and spectacular views abound. Nice mural on Lowrie. View from the hill. But the...

Exploring the 90 neighborhoods of pittsburgh. Larimer is a neighborhood that has, apparently, seen better days. Who made his fortune in railroads in the Pittsburgh area before moving westward and founding a little town called Denver, CO, built a manor house in the area. Larimer’s daughter married James Mellon, son of Thomas (yes, that Thomas Mellon. Despite the sometimes bleak atmosphere, Larimer has several public gardens with painted artwork. There are murals that adorn blighted buildings. And ...Accor...

Built in 1854, what is now the Grand Hall used to be St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, a hub for the German, Swiss and Austrian communities. Exploring the 90 neighborhoods of pittsburgh. View from stanton heights. The western part of Stanton Heights is tucked away on a cliff, almost forming a sub-neighborhood; the houses there show a bit more variety and have great views of Downtown and the Strip. Obviously, you’re not a golfer. My guess, though I’m not sure, is that the chunk in the middle, where the streets are not on situated in grid patterns, was the golf course. Kinda looks like a golf course, no? Bikers beware: christopher street. Stant...
