Wednesday, October 22, 2008. End of the Road Festival 2008 - Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorset. So, having avoided most of the rain – and sadly a handful of the afternoon sets – it is with a fair amount of excitement and expectation at what my dirt cheap £105 ticket will bring me that I wander through the cluster of ethically sourced and fair trade stalls to the festival’s second stage, The Big Top, to catch the second half of Laura Marling. The first one of the day is Absentee. Do something rather similar....

Thursday, August 06, 2009. Richmond Fontaine - You Can Move Back Here [Trash Aesthetics single]. Masters of the disaffected down and out, purveyors of the most heartbreaking alt. country music out there, and possessors of one of the finest lyricists in America, Richmond Fontaine celebrate 15 years of making music with ‘You Can Move Back Here’, the first single from forthcoming 8th studio album – the characteristically poignantly titled. We Used To Think The Freeway Sounded Like A River. Opening with the ...

Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Bon Iver - For Emma [4AD single]. Despite the ubiquity of ‘Skinny Love’ earlier in the year, ‘For Emma’ – the half-title track of Bon Iver’s debut album – is actually the first official single to be released by the band. Not only does it provide fitting accompaniment to their first proper headline tour this side of the Atlantic, but such was the consistent brilliance of For Emma, Forever Ago. Solo performance announced the arrival of Bon Iver’s falsetto Americana earl...

Sunday, December 30, 2007. Contributions to rockfeedback.com Top 100 Records of 2007. I managed to dash off a few words about some of my favourites below…. 59) Jamie T – Panic Pevention (Virgin). Jamie Treays is a young middle-class Londoner who, like many of his peers, spent his teens drinking, taking recreational drugs, getting into fights and everything else typical of ‘naughties’ youth. How do we know? 23) Dinosaur Jr. – Beyond (Pias). Panda Bear – Person Pitch (Paw Tracks). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Thursday, June 25, 2009. Fifteen to Hum - June '09 Collection Part Two. And so some more info on the Fifteen to Hum choices. Be picking up album of the year awards come December? We've still got half the year to go but it's definitely got a chance - "Do You Remember" is one of many outstanding tracks and perfectly showcases the drone and shoegaze influences that pervade it. Faris and friends will face some serious competition from. Forget best (though it's up there). Were the first signing to Vice magazi...

Monday, September 07, 2009. Noah and the Whale - The First Days of Spring [Mercury album]. Whether by circumstance or design ( The First Days of Spring. But rarely can there have been such a stark departure, such a musical growth spurt. Though lyrically adept and with its fair share of dark moments, the often lackadaisical folk of debut Peaceful the World Lays Me Down. From the opening heartbeat of a bass drum, every layer of the album seems clearly thought out, and they sit together in arresting fashion...

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Born Ruffians Interview May '08 (and live at Amersham Arms). Born Ruffians. The name does sum them up pretty well doesn’t it? For the Toronto band’s debut album, Red, Yellow and Blue. The band was formed while the three were at high school, with the added connection of Mitch being Luke’s cousin. However, beginning by playing Strokes, Hives and Constantines covers there seemed to be no burning desire for fame or to just be in a band to be ‘cool’. Who lent his knob-twiddling talent...

Monday, 26 May 2014. Yayoi Kusama at Seoul Arts Center! Morning from sunny Seoul! So as promised, I was going to give the Yayoi Kusama exhibition it's very own blog post just because it was simply soooo AMAZINGGG! I've been a MASSIVE fan of her work for years more so since having the chance to first see some of her work in the flesh when I attended the Aichi Triennale in Japan a few years ago. So I was SUPER SUPER SUPER EXCITED when I heard that she had a solo show opening here in Seoul! So my lack of bl...
