A blog about freight cars. Laquo; Car of the Day; RGCX 46230. Car of the Day: CSXT 225370. Car of the Day: OHCR 9939. Car of the day; the Ohio Central’s 9939. A 50 foot, 4868cf boxcar. Built in 1958 by Pullman Standard, rebuilt 1979, when it is likely the sill and floor were strengthened. It was sitting in Coshocton, Ohio for a few days last week, and I was fortunate enough to be able to get both sides. A blog about freight cars. Laquo; Car of the Day: OHCR 9939. PS 3002 2-bay LO. Car of the Day: CSXT 225370. Built in 1964 by American Car and Foundry, CSXT 225370 is still plugging away 45 years after it was built. Pictured in November 2008 in Zanesville, Ohio, the 3700 cf cylindrical covered hopper was bringing the raw materials to the glass factory in town when I spotted it. It is still listed on CSX’s website. Here are two similar cars in previous paint incarnations, courtesy railcarphotos.com.

A blog about freight cars. Laquo; Car of the Day: CSXT 225370. Steel mill rolling stock, Volume 1. PS 3002 2-bay LO. First in a series about 2-bay rib sided covered hoppers. Because I like ’em. The Pullman Standard 3002cf covered hopper is kind of obscure. Built only for the BN (as far as I can tell) in 1971, they came in a batch of 200, series 440150 to 440349. The main spotting features are a lack of a roof overhang and the “brackets” on the ribs over the truck centers. Tags: 2 bay covered hopper.

There were a handful of DJJX Thralls thrown in to boot, and then a few NAHX Berwick “Coalveyer” style tubs came along. Then suddenly, former WFAX 4000 cf Ortners started showing up. The Thralls were cascaded to scrap duty, along with a few PS 4000s that apparently were never in coal service on the OC. In trying to read the former owner of these cars on the ACI tags, it appear to say OGEX.

RGCX (Rio Grande Chemical) 46230 is part of a group of gondolas that have been showing up in Zanesville of late. They are 1978 built Ortner 47 (IL) footers. They are 2800 cf cars. The Ortner jackpad/pulling pad gives the cars away, as does the corrugated end, that appears on some of the company’s later built high sided gondolas in coal service by OC. Tags: car of the day. A recent trip to the Steel Valley, specifically Steubenville, Ohio, netted me a visit to famed Mingo Junction, once home to big Alcos, now home to not much, specifically an operating steel mill.
