Starting Seedlings Indoors | On Linden Hill

Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. Setting up Planters and Mixing the Soil →. May 29, 2011. A set on Flickr. I started some of my seeds under grow lights inside in early March. I think I could have actually waited a bit and sowed them directly in the ground, but I was really eager to get started and just grow something. Which were impossible to find in any Home Depot in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. I went to four different stores and then finally ordered them from Amazon. In just four weeks I had tomato, ...

Dead Cat Chronicles | On Linden Hill
https://onlindenhill.wordpress.com/2011/07/10/dead-cat-chronicles
Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. July 10, 2011. Look closely at this otherwise bucolic garden photo and you will see a haunting and disturbing site. There in the middle, nestled in between my potted tomatoes and peppers, lies the carcass of a cat. So I channeled my inner pioneer woman, put on my rubber boots and gloves, tied a handkerchief around my face to ward off any airborne disease, and scooped his (or her – I didn’t bother to check) body into an ultra-thick trash bag. Then I disinfec...I know other ...

I’m Back! | On Linden Hill

Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. March 14: Peas and Carrots →. March 4, 2012. Is this thing on? In fact, it is. As it turns out, a Word Press blog doesn’t evaporate into Internet ether after you abandon it. Instead, it languishes in web purgatory as a haunting, sometimes embarrassing, reminder of your once earnest effort to fashion something meaningful out of your life. Who knew? So where were we? Oh yeah, it was July 2011 and a feral cat died in my garden. Stay tuned for more updates to come. March 14: P...

Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. April 1: Cucumbers & Compost. April 4: Firing Up the Composter. April 5, 2012. I brought my composter out of the basement and out into the yard sometime last October to give it a good clean. And then…I forgot about it. Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. March 19: New Sprouts! March 14: Peas and Carrots. March 14, 2012. Then I sowed a few seeds outdoors – carrots, peas and more kale and cabbage – and planted my tomatoes and peppers under grow lights in the basement. Last year I started those March 1st,. But I think it may have been too early. I had to re-pot them twice before I planted them in the ground, and I don’t think the extra head start made much of a difference. Peas – Tall Telephone (3). Kale – Tuscan (6). Killer ...

Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. Harvest Meal: Kale and Lettuce Caesar Salad. The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out. June 4, 2011. My vermicompost bin was a gift from my sister, a gardening expert who created this Vermicomposting Fact Sheet. That lists some great tips and tricks. After bugging me for months to take an old bin that she had parked in our mom’s garage, I finally did so on the condition that she set it up and give me a private tutorial. Gardening in Ridgewood, Queens. Newer posts →. July 5, 2011. This mystery plant has sprouted up next to one of my pepper plants. While it might be a weed, I think it’s from a fruit or vegetable seed left over in the worm castings I used as fertilizer. I wonder what it could be? The flowers dangle in the same way that pepper flowers do, except they are yellow, not white. The leaves are pocked with holes and the stalk is not as woody as the pepper plant stem. Hmm…. UPDATE – 7-10-11:. July 4, 2011. It might...
