Playful Usability: August 2011
http://playfulusability.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Experiments and theory in combining game and usability design. Friday, August 12, 2011. Lesson from Games: Discarding. This is something I have occasionally thought about, so I'll write it down now. I'll get back to the relationship of games and places next week. It applies especially to board games that require strategic thinking. This is of course part of a larger context of strategic thinking that games, especially board games, teach us. Friday, August 5, 2011. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Dota 2 Next ...
Playful Usability: Alternate vs Augmented
http://playfulusability.blogspot.com/2012/01/alternate-vs-augmented.html
Experiments and theory in combining game and usability design. Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Ultimately it's not a big deal. It's just nice to be specific. It is also clear that these two terms do not overlap entirely but they do so a lot. For the record, I would say that a location-based treasure hunt game is alternate reality, not augmented. Bonus question: is geocaching alternate or augmented reality? That is a tough indeed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Playful Usability: October 2011

Experiments and theory in combining game and usability design. Thursday, October 6, 2011. A quick ad. I started another blog called Shouting from the Sidelines. Unlike this blog which focuses on academic stuff and beneficial games, the new blog is 100% game design. I'll be analyzing games and also occasionally writing about my own designs. Hamsters and Plague: New Version (1.01)
http://hamstersandplague.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-version-101.html
Saturday, February 5, 2011. New Version (1.01). I have uploaded a new version of Hamsters and Plague. Old hamsters will now catch the plague if next to it, instead of dying. This makes the game a lot more challenging. Better level design. This also makes the game more challenging. The game now loops back to title screen from highscore when the player clicks with the mouse. Note2: I added a handy 'download latest version' link under ABOUT. Posted by Mika Oja. Hamsters and Plague: March 2011
http://hamstersandplague.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 1, 2011. Installation is a Pain. I actually had a chance to try installing the game on Windows today. Did not go very smoothly. To circumvent the problem I have once again updated installation instructions. In good news tonight, I think I just tackled one big design problem yesterday. I'll tell more about it when I'm ready to release the next version, which will be 1.10 to indicate an actual gameplay change. Posted by Mika Oja. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Original version (Windows XNA).

Hamsters and Plague: Bug-fixed 1.02 release for Python
http://hamstersandplague.blogspot.com/2011/02/bug-fixed-102-release-for-python.html
Monday, February 28, 2011. Bug-fixed 1.02 release for Python. Ahem The 1.02 is just a bug fix. The bug in question being no game over when hamsters die out. Oops. I also added high score saving into disk. The game now creates a hamstersdata folder under your home directory and stores high score list there. I am looking into more elegant options. I updated all the download links. Get 1.02 Python release here. Posted by Mika Oja. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Original version (Windows XNA).

Hamsters and Plague: Programming Post-Mortem
http://hamstersandplague.blogspot.com/2011/02/programming-post-mortem.html
Tuesday, February 15, 2011. Writing this took a bit longer than expected. Probably something to do with the sudden trip to Hamburg. Fortunately I still remember most of the stuff pretty well. As with the design, this considers only the Global Game Jam part of the work. When unsure, especially if it's your first jam, it's best to design a game you already know how to implement. Scope for four hours or less (in a 48 hour jam). Estimates without experience are really optimistic. Posted by Mika Oja.

Playful Usability
Experiments and theory in combining game and usability design. Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Sensor Data and Interactivity: Real Time vs Discrete. In theory there is an upside to this more limited use of sensor data: because the input is just a number, a game developed for one purpose can rather effortlessly be fielded for another purpose. In reality however persuasive power is likely reduced if there is no thematic connection between activity and application. This concludes my random musings for now. Regardles...
