Playwright in the cages: 30 January 2011

http://playwrightincages.blogspot.com/2011_01_30_archive.html

Sunday, 30 January 2011. World enough and time - Austen Layard and the Library of Nineveh. For my valedictory post on this blog, at the end of my residency at the NLS, I thought I'd share two more favourite items from the John Murray Archive. What you can see above is a passport, circa 1842, personally signed by Lord Palmerston, then foriegn secretary. Pretty cool to start with. He never made it.as a glance at the rest of his passport can show. It all got a bit complicated in the Middle East.these en...

Thursday, 2 December 2010. Lady Sale and the siege of Kabul - November 1841. Continuing extracts from the Journal of Lady Florentia Sale, published by John Murray in 1843:. There is another (unflattering) mention of Burnes in Lady Sale's journal entry for the next day, which is full of recrimination against Afghan aliies (the King the Brits supported seems to be a perfect bounder! Stuffed shirts in Calcutta, and sickly, feeble General Elphinstone in particular. Lady Sale goes on:. Sturt went to Gen Elphi...

Tuesday, 4 January 2011. Revenge - Afghanistan 1842. In previous posts, through the writings of Murray authors Alexander Burnes and Lady Sale, I've explored first hand accounts of the outbreak and disasters of the First Afghan War. A third author, Reverend George Glieg, takes the story a little further. The Empire wasn't simply going to lick it's wounds. No. There had to be a response to the humiliation of British Arms. Reverend Glieg was with them:. Next priority was the release of the British hostages,...

Tuesday, 14 September 2010. Normal Service to be Exhumed as soon as possible. Just to say I'm currently innundating my colleagues here with unreasonable demands for images I can use here.on Alexander Burnes and the Afghan War of 1838-41.and on a chap called Austen Layard who dug up Nineveh a little later the same decade.and once I have some nice things for you to look at while I'm going on about them.normal service will be resumed. Friday, 14 January 2011. Afghanistan and Wrapping Up. I'm coming to the end of my residency now at the NLS. It's been an exciting and bewilderingly diverse three years. This blog has been one of the more interesting experiments. I've tried to use it to tell stories that have fascinated me, and as ways of thinking about how these documents from the 19th Century impact on an understanding of the world today.for me, anyway. It's surprising how resonant it is:. The British army in possession of Afghanistan w...

ROCKS, ROCKS & MORE ROCKS

ROCKS, ROCKS and MORE ROCKS. SEEN ON THE SIDE OF AN AEROSOL CAN. A QUOTE ABOUT TAXING THE STUPID. Hans Christian Andersen's First Fairy Tale. The sheep – a fine little sheep – was the candle’s mother, and the melting pot its father. Its mother had given it a shiny white body and an inkling about life, but from its father it had been given a craving for the flaming fire that would eventually go to its marrow and bone and shine for it in life. That’s how it was born. The filthy outer shell kept all the goo...

Playwright in the Second Row | Erin Panttaja’s observations from the audience and behind the scenes

Playwright in the Second Row. August 31, 2016 · 2:57 pm. We made our annual pilgrimage to Ashland to visit the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. This is the last year that the kids aren’t allowed to come to any shows. (we thought about sneaking them in, but they’re really, really five) The older kids are actually able to see just about everything, though when we got to the intermission of. I was very sad to miss. August 18, 2014 · 12:38 pm. Our identical twins need a pair of bond servant identical twins.
