It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Wednesday, July 31, 2013. One Year Anniversary of the Fierce Five's Gold Medal. A year ago today, I was curled in the fetal position on the floor of my apartment waiting for women's team finals to start in London. I'm super jingoistic (much to my own chagrin) during the Olympics and even though the U.S. women were heavy favorites, you never know what might happen. Anyway, here's the most gorgeous piece of gymnastics from the Games- McKayla Maroney's team finals vault:.

Here's a video made by Temple gymnastics alum and current Pippin performer, Richard Maguire:. This crisis and others like it should force universities to rethink how resources are split between sports. As this Deadspin. In the case of Temple, they tried to be a big time football team and have lost a ton of money on it. As Barry Petchesky writes:. Posted by Dvora Meyers.

Unorthodox Gymnastics: August 2013

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Thursday, August 29, 2013. Shannon Miller's World All-Around Titles. I'm in on a Thursday night, which is sadly becoming a recurring event. This anecdote about my disappointing social life is not just a pity grab. It's about how I came to be watching gymnastics videos from the mid 90s tonight when it dawned on me- both of Shannon Miller's world all-around titles were won at championships that did not feature a team competition. Do you think the outcomes would've been diff...

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Friday, September 27, 2013. McKayla's Vaults, 2009-2013. Here's a montage of McKayla Maroney's vaults from 2009 until present day. The progress she made between 2009 and 2010 is nothing short of astounding. Posted by Dvora Meyers. Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Last Pass: Double Layout. A double layout as a final pass has rarely been seen in women's floor exercise though back in the early 90s two female gymnasts had used it as a final pass. Posted by Dvora Meyers. Well, the...

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Monday, May 19, 2014. Why is Catherine Lyons' floor exercise so good? Over the weekend, Catherine Lyons, the British gymnast that the entire gymternet seems to have an enormous crush on, made all of our dreams come true by winning the floor gold in the junior portion of the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Here's her winning routine from event finals:. Will she be able to amass a high enough D-score without adding a fourth pass? Posted by Dvora Meyers. I'm a wri...

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Monday, January 5, 2015. 1993 Yeshiva University Promo Video Is Glorious And So Deliciously 80s/90s (And Jewish). It has been a long while since I've last blogged here, but for mostly good reasons. I've been traveling for the gymnastics book. And then writing said book. But I had to briefly emerge from blogging hiatus to post this just surfaced video, the promo video that Yeshiva University produced in 1993 to recruit new students. 35: What's with this music? When the gan...

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Here's to trying to read these books with a more benevolent eye. The elite gymnasts may not be able to write a gorgeous sentence, but I was never able to do a full twisting double back on floor. Let's call it even. I know that I've quoted DFW and this passage before on this blog, but it's so good that I could read it over and over. If you want to read the full text of this essay, check it out here. Unorthodox Gymnastics: November 2013

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Monday, November 25, 2013. What do "get" and Breaking Bad have in common? This meme that I made- my second ever and my first without technical assistance. I don't know why this concept was beyond me up until this point- it was so easy. Much easier than trying to extract a Jewish divorce- aka "get"- from a recalcitrant husband. Or Walter White. And here is the scene from the show when that famous line was uttered in all of its menacing glory:. Posted by Dvora Meyers. I kno...

Unorthodox Gymnastics: April 2013

It's not called Jewnastics. Yet. Thursday, April 25, 2013. Flashback: 1989 National Champ Event Finals. Bart Conner, however, remains unchanged. Has that man aged in the past two decades? Has he struck some sort of Faustian bargain to keep from aging? Or does he have a grotesque Dorian Gray-like portrait stowed in an attic in Oklahoma somewhere? I simply must know. Also interesting is the discussion of judging with Muriel Grossfeld at around 24:48 in the video. Posted by Dvora Meyers. You can read it here.
