Fixation of standards of ISM drugs is a great challenge for the scientific field, particularly for those drugs which are derived form plants. It is due to the variation of active principles present therein. This variation is quite natural due to ecological factors where the drugs are grown. Chemistry Division undertakes physicochemical studies on drugs of Indian Systems of Medicine which includes water-soluble extractive, alcohol-soluble extractive, total ash value, acid-insoluble ash value, tests for presence of chemical constituents and T.L.C. Modern analytical instruments available in the Laboratory for standardisation of Indian Medicines are U.V. Spectrophotometer, GLC, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, T.L.C.
