plodding in paradise: A SENSE OF BELONGING

http://ploddinginparadise.blogspot.com/2010/10/sense-of-belonging.html

SAILING: Year One, Phase One. ICW SAILING: Phase Two. Monday, November 1, 2010. A SENSE OF BELONGING. Wrightsville Beach, NC 34º12.39N 77º48W. I'm not sure how the mice did with their best laid plans today, but ours were foiled by unexpected winds. Our intention was to make Southport, which required a carefully planned crossing of the Cape Fear River. I guess it should come as no surprise that water would make you reflective, but I was caught unawares when I stepped onto Carolina Beach just before sunset.

plodding in paradise: OPEN WATER

http://ploddinginparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/open-water.html

SAILING: Year One, Phase One. ICW SAILING: Phase Two. Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Carolina Beach, NC 34º03.556N 77º53.285W. We were told yesterday that we had nothing to fear but Cape Fear River itself. Local knowledge and a little studying under our belts, we untied and motored into Snow's Cut, with, apparently, the same information as everyone else. There were two sailboats behind us, and out front was a veritable traffic jam. All the other boats started putting up sails. Starting at an already high 8&#...

plodding in paradise: GET THERE WHEN I GET THERE

http://ploddinginparadise.blogspot.com/2010/10/get-there-when-i-get-there.html

SAILING: Year One, Phase One. ICW SAILING: Phase Two. Sunday, October 31, 2010. GET THERE WHEN I GET THERE. Swansboro, NC 34°41.07N 77°7.289W. Steam rising off the water at sunrise in Swansboro, NC. It was a bitter cold dawn in Swansboro. Dozens of small fishing boats buzzed around us on our way out of the harbor where we immediately fell behind an enchanting little catamaran named simply Ming. No, I'll get there when I get there," said the disembodied voice. It was tempting to pass Ming,. I realized tha...

plodding in paradise: WEATHER OR NOT

http://ploddinginparadise.blogspot.com/2010/10/weather-or-not.html

SAILING: Year One, Phase One. ICW SAILING: Phase Two. Wednesday, October 27, 2010. Geese headed south from Beaufort. Oriental, NC 35°0248N 76°6948W. There's an undeniable seduction in living close to the elements, the wind, waves, currents and tides dictating when and where I can go and how long I can stay. It taps into something ancient and primal, stirrings deep in my reptilian brain. My body is relearning the language of nature in a way that completely sidesteps conscious thought. After a gusty slog d...

plodding in paradise: TAMMY :: THE HIGHLIGHTS

http://ploddinginparadise.blogspot.com/p/tammy-highlights.html

SAILING: Year One, Phase One. ICW SAILING: Phase Two. TAMMY : THE HIGHLIGHTS. How did a skinny kid born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, (yes, THAT Roswell) end up on a sailboat in the wide open ocean? And what happened after that? Then we bought a car for our road trip phase. Eventually settling in Napa Valley. Where we are having our wine country phase, living small. As kid, I played Swiss Family Robinson in the willow tree out back - yes, in the middle of New Mexico. Talk about shipwrecked! Our Isla...

plodding to paradise: ISABELLA'S PASSING

http://ploddingtoparadise.blogspot.com/2010/03/isabellas-passing.html

Monday, March 8, 2010. We did not expect to gain new friends when we bought our cruising boat nor did we plan to gain more when we sold Isabella. Our first hint that we might have a common bond with Suzanne and Pete was when they drove up in the car on the right, and Chip drove up in the car on the left. The four of us spent a warm, springlike day on Isabella. Working together to pass her from one hand to the next, a farewell and a maiden voyage in one. Suzanne and Pete plan to take Isabella. Love your w...

plodding to paradise: ISABELLA'S PROGRESS

http://ploddingtoparadise.blogspot.com/2009/10/isabellas-progress.html

Wednesday, October 14, 2009. Dent was not such a big deal. There was no delamination, which means the fiberglass hasn't been damaged. The surveyor tested it with a water meter and found it to be dry. Excellent! That photo shows the cutout under the bench seat. The slanting part is the inside of the hull and the three cross pieces are the shoring that was added. Or go somewhere else? We haven't decided yet. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Or talk to us using this CONTACT FORM. 4 XXXBuy our cruising bo...

plodding to paradise: POWER SHOPPING

http://ploddingtoparadise.blogspot.com/2010/10/power-shopping.html

Monday, October 11, 2010. Annapolis, MD - As we stood at the gate of the Annapolis sailboat show this morning, I felt overwhelmed by how very far we've come in one year. When we entered the show last year, sad and wistful, Isabella. Our old boat, was back in the Outer Banks having her belly repaired. We were living in a small apartment. With no viable prospects for the business, wondering if the waiting would ever end. One amazing year. One amazing shopping trip. One happy toast to good times - despite t...

plodding to paradise: ON YOUR MARK

http://ploddingtoparadise.blogspot.com/2010/10/on-your-mark.html

Friday, October 22, 2010. Manteo, NC - Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life. I know what you're thinking. Every day is the first day of the rest of my life, but let me explain. Tomorrow, at long last, we will untie the lines and leave this dock in Manteo, sail out of the Roanoke Sound and leave our home waters. In this marathon plod to the water, tomorrow is the finish line, the successful culmination of a 10-year plan. We made it. We did it. Our plod to the water is complete. As we have navi...

H a b i b i S a i l s: Flashback: How we ended up on Block Island

http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/11/flashback-how-we-ended-up-on-block.html

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: How we ended up on Block Island. Shape of Block Island: locals call it a "pork chop". It was mid-April in Culebra/Puerto Rico when we met Bill (an American cruising bartender with Irish roots, we mentioned him already in this former post. We all have a certain picture in mind when we hear "Bermuda" - sup-tropical climate, turquoise water, offshore companies, Bermuda triangle etc. But what's the picture when you hear "Block Island"? According to our friend...

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: hot, humid and calm - our last stretch. Habibi entering the C&D Canal. After winning the battle against the stinging flies (and the Coast Guard - but that's another story.) in the Delaware Bay we faced our very last anchoring maneuver behind Reedy Island. In the Delaware River. Thinking of our friends Chris and Steve on Scott-Free. THE GAP (photo credit by " Cruisin' with John and Deb. Then we turned West into the C&D (Chesapeake and Delaware) Canal. ...

H a b i b i S a i l s: Bermuda - Trip Update

http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2013/05/bermuda-trip-update.html

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Bermuda - Trip Update. Imagine this view for 6 1/2 days. Sorry for the delay – but as we have no internet on board everything takes more time. As promised here is the update on our longer crossing from Puerto Rico to Bermuda. In simple words, it was surreal! We left Palmas del Mar Marina in Puerto Rico early on Wednesday morning 8. For three days in a row we saw sustained winds of 30 – 40 knots and seas as big as houses! The rest of the stormy days we stayed on a st...

H a b i b i S a i l s: Flashback: Battle of Habibi

http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2014/01/flashback-battle-of-habibi.html

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Flashback: Battle of Habibi. We experienced a more or less uneventful sail from New York down South towards the Chesapeake Bay. Area - well, we managed to escape a few squalls and not to pick up one of the numerous lobster pots on the way. Ah, and a school of dolphins accompanied us for a while. When entering the Delaware Bay. We encountered a well known phenomena (which, truth be told, had nothing to do with our shower intervals! An ordonata attacking and.

http://habibisails.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

A Swiss couple sails around the world. Final flashback: Habibi's Sailing Adventure 2011-13. It's been more than a year that we pulled into Rock Hall/Maryland to end our sailing adventure of two years and to start a landlubber's life once again. In the meantime Habibi has found new owners and we are certain that they care for her as much as we did. Now, kick back and enjoy the show! Picture below shows us on our maiden voyage. Right after we had left the dock in Rock Hall/ Maryland back in October 2011.

Plodding through the Presidents

10 Things Thomas Jefferson Loved. He could not live without something to love. Washington socialite Margaret Smith, on Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson had more passions than most people have socks. As I move forward on my presidential biography quest, I bid adieu to Mr. Jefferson by looking at just ten of the many things he loved. I hate to break it to conservatives, but Jefferson was a bona fide tree-hugger. A great lover of nature –. And trees in particular –. A pet mockingbird named Dick was Jeffer...
