On my last visit I counted nine between the Horse trails and the drum. This pair was to be disturbed by pedestrians with a dog. This plover managed to feed briefly before being chased by passers-by. Plover Beach is situated between Big Bay and the Horse Trails at Blouberg (Blaauwberg) Strand, Cape Town, South Africa. Here the survival of the little Plover birds are presently threatened. The Oystercatchers who used to breed in this area, suffered the same fate. Measurements: About 18 cm long. Weight: About 72 grams. Extremities: Legs and feet are black or grey.

Plovers and other sea-birds near Big Bay, Cape Town. Friday, May 8, 2009. It is a cloudy day. The beach is particularly quiet. The plovers are very active feeding on the incoming-tide. Passers-by force the plovers back to the dunes. They return as soon as the coast is clear. On busy days the plovers do not get an opportunity to feed in the surf. I have watched for hours how a pair of Oystercatchers unsuccessfully try to feed on the high tide mark. On warm summer days the beach traffic is uninterrupted.

Boat capsized at Rietvlei - Cape. March 11, 2012 on 10:40 pm In Cape. MAC (Milnerton Aquatic Club). A boat capsized at a Cape Nature reserve. It was overloaded with ten people on board and some children not wearing life-jackets. There was no water ranger or rescue craft on standby. Luckily to the Millerton Aquatic came to the rescue and no lives were lost. Will this be a wake-up call or will they wait until someone drowns before they have a water safety officer on duty? People drowned on the vlei before.
