但是宣是不是真的在宋朝的宣和年間 1119-1125年. 究竟從宣和或其他年份到近代中間長達數百年間，發生了甚麼事，骨牌由極度高雅的文人玩意兒，竟變成市井之徒的賭博之技呢這個問題，至今也得不到解答。續葉子譜的著書作者及年份比較確切，就是明朝萬曆年間 1573-1620年，由潘之恆所著。徐珂 1869-1928年清稗類鈔的賭博類有載. 後人打天九之戲，見於明潘子恆續葉子譜，謂分華夷二隊，至今猶然。最後一句，可謂深刻地描繪了中國社會的幾千年面貌窮人讀書，富人豪賭而當中天九一說，和續葉子譜相近，可見徐先生成書時，一樣有做功課。另一點值得留意的是，清朝民初不少通俗章回小說，經常有人物推玩骨牌，行酒令的情節，例如紅樓夢、鏡花緣等，就有不少描述。諷刺的是，中國古籍並無詳記，不要緊，遠在天邊，近在眼前，香港在殖民地時代，即1886年連新界也還未割讓出去，而愛迪生也只是在美國剛發明電燈泡，政府有一位公務員吳氏，竟然為此著書立說，出版了一本叫 A Book on Chinese Games of Chance ，詳細記載了當時本地人的賭博，當中包括了天九的玩法。
