Blog for Charleston Audubon: Views on nature near and far. Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Last Weekend's Project for the Birds Yields Immediate Results and Much Anticipation! That year, we were out of town at a bird club meeting but we were able to log in to our server to watch the children bounce around the box before they left the next morning. You can see the video of the whole story in this later post. Our regular readers also know that we have a bluebird box with a camera feed. Well we are fairly tir...

Blog for Charleston Audubon: Views on nature near and far. Sunday, April 27, 2014. Mama Wood Duck - Parc Perlière - April 22, 2014. I dedicate this post to Mama Wood Duck! Kudos to you, Mom! Inspite of the odds against successfully brooding a parasitized nest and despite the naysayers who said you could not do it - you did do it little Mama! You defended your nest from intruders and incubated their eggs as well as your own - all 15 of them - for 33 days! Ed down out of sight. Carl also chose a window...

Here's a quick update on the previous post's handsome and rugged Pomarine Jaeger. It’s Bat Week! The story of a Tree Bat on Dewees. October 29, 2015. February 16, 2016. I’ve seen bats on Dewees fairly often in early spring, and occasionally in summer. Since it’s National Bat Week. What I thought was a pinecone and a chip. Baby bat waiting for the mother to return. It was hard to see in the pre-dawn gloom, but eventually the mother returned and covered the baby and froze on the ground. Mother bat covering baby. You can just barely see the baby on the right side of the photo above.
