I joined the Royal Navy on Tuesday 6th February 1979 at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint Cornwall. Some of the class didn’t make it. Naval life is not for everyone and two trainees from my entry opted for Premature Voluntary Release (PVR) and a couple also got Discharged Unsuitable During Training (DUDT). Anson 06 Passing out on 16th March 1979. And so it begins.

After leaving HMS Fife in September 1979 I travelled home for a spot of leave before joining HMS Defiance, the maintenance base next to HMS Drake. Here I was assigned to the Craft Support Unit, a small team dealing with maintenance and engine changes on mine sweepers and inshore patrol boats. Already drafted to. I was only helping out for a few months, but in that time managed to do engine changes on the Flintham, Dittisham, Sandpiper and Peterel.

Having left HMS Cornwall with fond memories, I joined the former HMS Defiance, SFM (standing for Superintendent Fleet Maintenance). HMS Sultan is the home of all Naval Marine Engineering and as such, I have returned there on numerous occasions. The last time I returned to HMS Sultan was in August 2007 when I was working at. I had a number of courses to complete as part of my re-training back to General Service and to subsequently join HMS Cornwall. This took me up to Christmas before I started the 5 week Advanced Fire Fighting Course at HMS Phoenix on Whale Island. Once this was completed, I felt adequately prepared to join.
