May Day used to be on 1st of May, always, unless this fell on a Sunday when lip-service would be paid to the belief of the clergy that the Sabbath came before the rites of the old religion and it was partially moved to the following day. You either loved the May soup or loathed it, but you didn't dare refuse it! The punishment for not eating at least one bowlful was to miss the festivities the next day. Why? 5 May 2013 at 07:06.

Not deserted, as there were always adults around, but my father would not allow me to invite other children in to play and my older brother was often away with his friends.
