Monday, 21 October 2013. Some funny in a list. So the Telegraph wrote a "Top ten comedians to follow on Twitter thing" .like they do. Agreed with some thought they'd missed some others. Here's some of mine. They're not all professional comedians but they're all bloody funny. Effectively what I'm saying is, I think I'm 'better than the Telegraph'. He writes "a bit" and campaigns against the use of the Y word in football. He get's a lot of crap for that. Two years later: Turbo. Recursaphobia is the fear of...

Tuesday, 25 November 2014. You are what you tweet. This week (and it’s only Tuesday) has been another round of “the hunger games of opinion” on Twitter. A hashtag which Labour supporters decided was necessary, to bring down a PM, maybe now or maybe later, was deemed the most important thing that needed to happen. It was possibly in order to deflect the flack inherent in the whole Emily Thornberry thing, who knows but it was organised, and orchestrated. I was opposed to it. Jack Monroe fell foul of a mob.

Friday, 29 August 2014. The kitchen phone was ringing as Sarah came in through the front door. It was pouring with rain outside and she dropped her coat and bag in the hallway as she ran to answer it. 8220;Hello” she panted into the phone. Her husband John’s voice was gently teasing “I’d thought you left me, that was ringing for ages. I nearly gave up”. 8220;Oh hi I’m so sorry I was walking the dog. I just got through the door”. 8220;Well that’s a relief, “ He said. 8220;Thank you Sarah” he said &#...

Saturday, 13 December 2014. In cyberspace everyone can hear you scream. Photo credit rickygervais.com. December 2014 the final episode of “Derek” will be broadcast on C4. So far the show has received an Emmy Nomination and this week a Golden Globe nomination for Ricky Gervais’s performance. There is what can best be described as a range of views applied to the show. In the UK Gervais is viewed a lot less kindly by the critics than he is in the US. In many respects this is cultural. Now Gervais has risen ...

Tuesday, 24 September 2013. On Sunday night we went to see About Time. When the film had finished it took me an hour to stop crying. I eventually stopped and. Later my 19 year old daughter Lizzy, drifted into the kitchen and asked what the film was like. When I started telling her, I started crying again. She put her arms around me, like my Mum used to and I had the clearest memory of being a child again. The film is just so beautiful. Tim at the age of 21 learns the secret of the men in his family, from...

Saturday, 16 March 2013. Spite addicts and the haters who love them. It was comic relief last night. A great British institution, which has marked its 25th Anniversary by doing what it always does. It takes fundraising on crucial issues and it engages the country through the prism of our best-loved comedians and musicians. However it also gives us a chance to view Britain at it’s worst and the place to find this darker side of those of us who are “shitbrits” is in the undiluted, unedite...8232;It has als...

Monday, 23 December 2013. For Mum who would have been 80 years old today. Mum on a break Nairobi 1957. My mum would have been 80 years old today. I wanted to try not to feel sad but to celebrate the fact that I was lucky enough to know her. It’s impossible to convey how lovely she was or to try and encapsulate her life into a blog but I wanted to mark today by explaining what she meant to me. Child in a hospital, rather than at home. Mum's parents on their way to a wedding 1957. Her mum took her to the s...

Monday, 22 September 2014. As we slide inexorably towards a general election, there is a lot of talk about our processes and systems, representation and choice. What we will also see in abundance is the ubiquitous PR enhancing photo-op and no one is more in demand for a political photo-op, than people with a disability. It yells compassion, understanding, inclusion and democracy at it’s finest, yet where are disabled people when it comes to policy? Welfare reform sounds so sensible, so necessary and so p...
