The mechanical system has two main design goals for both the compass and the beacon – portability and water resistance. Water resistance is achieved by combining acrylic with plastic bonding for the casings. Both cases are built using puzzle box construction with flat doors held tightly with latches for internal access. The use of o-rings around the doors keeps water resistance. In this case, the GPS coordinates from the beacon can still be obtained by the compass and the compass points in the direction of the beacon. The compass will always point the way to the beacon if they can communicate with each other and obtain GPS signal. Both utilize a LED, a GPS breakout board, and a RF transceiver hooked into an Atmega328 microcontroller, while the compass also contains a magnetometer, a accelerometer, and a servo.
