Frost Flowers in the Beaufort Sea (315KB GIF). Frost flowers are highly saline ice crystals which grow on the surface of new ice. These structures have been observed all over the Arctic but until recently were regarded only as a curiosity. Taylor Columns in the Chukchi Sea. Contours of the summer ice retreat in the Chukchi Sea. The picture demonstrates that as the ice retreats it leaves a tongue of unmelted ice for about two weeks over Herald Shoal, an abrupt seamount which can be seen as a roughly circular white region in about the center of the picture. The explanation for this feature may be attributable to a phenomenon known as a Taylor column. For more about this research, please refer to our paper :.
