Polyglot Vegetarian: Green Bean
http://polyglotveg.blogspot.com/2011/11/green-bean.html
Grazing through the world of words. Thursday, November 24, 2011. The supermarket was well stocked this week with fresh green beans. The side of the display had jars of gourmet fried onions — another postmodern reimagining of a boomer classic. In keeping with the holiday tradition of assigning a writer to write about the current holiday's traditions, time.com. Finds that it was served with barbeque to the Shah of Iran and Empress Soraya that year in Florida. Since that visit. With Fermented Bean Curd.

Grazing through the world of words. Sunday, March 23, 2008. I have mentioned before. That I collect vegetarian cookbooks from different times and places and in different languages. A number of these are from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, mostly in English with a few in French. As well as physical books, this subset is augmented by books scanned into Google Books. Though their subject categorization is as sloppy as the rest of their meta-data). Was quite literally the ...

Grazing through the world of words. Thursday, July 26, 2007. Posting here was light in the second quarter because of structural changes at the day job. To make up for that a little bit, here is a post on what a spread from the August, 1949 National Geographic. Titled “Our Vegetable Travelers” (text online here. The “World's No. 1 Vegetable.” In a meal from the mid-century suburban or later fast-food diet, potato might be the only vegetable. It is the state vegetable. In the larder tells me that Röschti.
Polyglot Vegetarian: Spaghetti Squash
http://polyglotveg.blogspot.com/2007/04/spaghetti-squash.html
Grazing through the world of words. Monday, April 30, 2007. Of Portobello mushrooms revealed how food changes in the not too distant past, within living memory, can be surprisingly obscure. So it is with spaghetti squash. On it from last summer, which opens with a complaint about pretend foods — and here I will admit that I enjoy some of the things it condemns, like Tofurky. Before — says:. The Cambridge World History of Food. Says ( p. 1856. Is a variety of Cucurbita pepo Linnaeus. The species that incl...
Polyglot Vegetarian: Garlic

Grazing through the world of words. Saturday, March 24, 2007. Is such an important food that it has already come up a couple of times here: as a later definition of the magic μῶλυ. And a major ingredient in Tương Ớt Tỏi Việt-Nam. So while enjoying the σκορδαλιά. At a recently relocated Greek restaurant I thought it deserved a post of its own. Perhaps even the first of several. But add a few bits and pieces and venture a little further afield. Chaucer says of the summoner. 8221; — occurs throughout ...

Latvia has 494 kilometers of white sandy beaches. 80% of the world’s amber reserves are found around the Baltic Sea, and the largest piece of amber ever found was discovered in Liepaja, in western Latvia. No importa la idioma. Language idiocy vanquished, in two acts →. July 28, 2007 · 10:22 am. Twelve points go to Latvia! Douze points à la Lettonie! Every year the Eurovision Song Contest brings pop singers from every European country (except, for some reason, Italy) to the capital of the country that won the contest the year before, and after an evening of tawdry, crazy, often totally insane acts, voting by the public determines the winner. No importa la idioma. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. A bunch of thin...

Monday, March 7, 2011. So, uh, good day, and welcome to the second entry in my reborn personal blog. Our topic today is 'metaphor' as you may be able to tell from the title bar up there. Hit a nerve while injecting and YOU TOO could have this . wonderful . sensation. Metaphorically, anyway. No actual carving involved. Maybe that's just me then. I wholeheartedly agreed. Well, wholeheartedly in part. See the two-ton canary in the corner? What if the metaphor comes from personal experience? Except none of t...

Big Blog O' Dave Stuff: February 2009
http://dempls.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 10, 2009. You got feces in my peanut butter! In an average 3 day period I get 10-20 emails. The past 2-3 weeks I've been getting easily 5X that (probably an even larger difference). The reason? I get notifications of product recalls emailed to me by the FDA. The recalls caused by Peanut Corporation of America's shipping salmonella tainted product make up the increase. The old Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ads spring to mind . You got your feces in my peanut butter! Monday, February 9, 2009.

Travels of a Polyglot
Image taken from Google Images. From my private journal (it was quite hard for me to post it) detailing my thoughts right before I left England on subjects such as saying goodbye to people you know and what you might be like at the end of your year abroad etc. etc. So, in the post I mentioned above, I asked a question which went something like "Who will I be at the end of my year abroad? A lot of things, some of them being:. I'm a home bird (as my friend Emily described me one day). I love my boyfriend m...

Grazing through the world of words. Tuesday, August 7, 2012. Two years ago, in a comment. At LanguageHat, AJP Crown. Wondered whether there was interest in writing about truffles here. Honestly, the challenge has not been material, but having time to put it into some kind of coherent form. These days, restaurants and frozen entrees offer dishes like mac-n-cheese that are truffled. That is, made with truffle oil. The LA food critic Jonathan Gold. But what of real truffles? Some classic European truffle di...
