Ulysses at Large: December 2008
http://ulyssesatlarge.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Thursday, December 18, 2008. I'm still not sure what I did, but somehow, while I was working on my to-do list (a FileMaker database), I accidentally deleted all of the active task records. Gack! I'm a slave to that database. Without those records, I'm not a freed slave: I'm a slave without a clue what to do. But did I panic? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I am an event photographer living in Dallas, Texas. Ulysses at Large: September 2008
http://ulyssesatlarge.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Hooray: Picasa 3 supports Pentax raw files. Chrome 1 no threat to Firefox 3. I've been using Google's new browser - named "Chrome" - ever since the day it was released a couple of weeks ago. Chrome is cute, but that's about all I can say in its favor. I'm going to stick with Firefox 3 for now. A third Firefox add-on (Surf Canyon) helps me wade through Google's search results more efficiently. . Finally, I'...

Ulysses at Large: April 2008
http://ulyssesatlarge.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Noticeable perspectival distortion occurs now and then in my photos and I recently decided I should do something about it. This prompted me to think a little about when distortion matters and when it doesn't. Here's a simple example of where it matters. This is a shot of my wife and daughter, standing outside our front door. What to do about it? Well, you could try changing your perspective. If you can get...

Ulysses at Large: February 2008

Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Friday, February 01, 2008. Katz Eye focusing screen. I now have a Katz Eye focusing screen in my Pentax K10D and I'm very happy with it. Like it's in focus. But you're making this assessment looking with one eye at an image that's smaller than a postage stamp. The Katz Eye focusing screen from Katz Eye Optics. I didn't get the opti-brite treatment on my screen, and I didn't get any special etching. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Ulysses at Large: November 2007
http://ulyssesatlarge.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Friday, November 30, 2007. I finally broke down and purchased Light Crafts LightZone. What are those benefits? LightZone, like Photoshop, allows selective editing, meaning that I can select a region of a photo (say, the sky) and change the contrast in that region without affecting other parts of the photo. This is not possible in Lightroom, which has no selection tool. And here is the LightZone zone mapper, for comparison:. But sometime...

Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Monday, March 02, 2009. Its Casimir Pulaski day! Here's a holiday that I seldom celebrate: General Casimir Pulaski Day! Pulaski was a brilliant Polish cavalryman who volunteered his services to General Washington during the Revolutionary War. He died from injuries suffered during one of his engagements but not before distinguishing himself and coming to be recognized as the Father of American Cavalry. View my complete profile.

Ulysses at Large: July 2007
http://ulyssesatlarge.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Comments about matters trivial - and quadrivial - by William Porter. Tuesday, July 10, 2007. My brother-in-law Tom and I were talking about depth of field yesterday. We disagreed - but it turns out we were both right. Tom said that the generally greater depth of field in compact cameras is a function of the smaller sensor size. I said that I thought that it wasn't the sensor size, but the smaller focal lengths of the lenses that matters. Puts it fairly succinctly:. Looking it from the other direction, I ...
