Shake and Make: School's Out
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/06/schools-out.html
Friday, June 14, 2013. As grateful as I am to have a job that starts and ends with a big break in between, it takes a lot of energy to finish the year: not just all the papers to be filed or thrown away (my favorite part! The farewells, but the decisions that have to be made for next year, and the honest look at what worked and what didn't. Which is done for now. Maybe Alice Cooper said it best:. Shake and Make: Making Friends
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/05/making-friends.html
Friday, May 24, 2013. So the expression "busy bee" is not for nothing- they really are busy, and I don't think any of them are looking busy. Like humans do sometimes when a group is working. They are all in it to win it, as they say. I also noted that the hive seemed really hot- lots of bees hanging around outside and when I changed the water I could feel the heat from the hive. Maybe you can imagine why this scene would be a little daunting! Then we just observed the bees flying around. I saw the di...

Shake and Make: Winter Bees
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/12/winter-bees.html
Friday, December 27, 2013. A snowy day this week finally gave me time to sit down and write! What a treat to have a snow day so early in snow season! I spent part of the snow day afternoon watching an instructional video on organic bee practices, that answered several of my lingering questions and made me feel pretty confident that I mostly know what I am doing. The guy in the video who teaches the bee classes doesn't even wear gloves when he puts his hand in the hive! Some day, maybe. As soon as the tem...

Shake and Make: first week with bees
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/05/first-week-with-bees.html
Tuesday, May 14, 2013. First week with bees. Here is some video J took of the arrival of the bees. This week just observing the bees after welcoming them to their new home. They get a little backed up at the entrance to the hive, and I imagine many cries of "stop landing on me! Are heard. When they exit they immediately ascend and fly off somewhere. They don't seem to linger in the yard for very long. They seem very very busy. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Shake and Make: May Garden and Bee Spa
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/05/may-garden-and-bee-spa.html
Wednesday, May 29, 2013. May Garden and Bee Spa. A cool wet spring made the garden explode very recently, as you can see:. Raspberries and our Mr. Lincoln rose bush. Fox gloves, more roses and the strawberry patch. This is a bee watering station that I made- it is filled with water but has rocks the bees can climb on so that they don't drown. I've only seen one bee here at a time, and I was disappointed. Then I thought, how awesome for a bee to get a little time away from craziness of the hive!

Shake and Make: Update on Bees
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/11/update-on-bees.html
Thursday, November 7, 2013. You can see some heads peaking out during recent sunny weather. If you look closely you can see the pollen basket on the back leg on the left. I emailed my Bee Mentor and she wrote back in all caps that I should go in and kill the beetles and make traps to catch the ones I couldn't kill. She also mentioned possible devastation. We repeated the removal and cleaning of the Pest Management board for a few weeks. Every time, there were fewer beetles and larva.

Shake and Make: Bee Day
http://shakeandmake.blogspot.com/2013/05/bee-day_7.html
Tuesday, May 7, 2013. A long post describing the arrival of my long anticipated bees! Spoiler alert: I did get stung. Here's the hive that Meme designed, it is a hybrid of a Top Bar hive, on the left and a Langstroth hive on the right. You can see that it is a long rectangle with a house on one end and three entrances. This hive or apiary could house 3 different sets of bees. Couldn't sleep the night before Bee pick up- too excited! I opened it and just saw a row of bars- no bees. My job was to trans...
