Pomene was initially discovered when a ship carrying a valuable cargo of sugar was shipwrecked here and subsequently a road was built to recover the cargo. Remenants of the wreck can still be seen on the south beach. There is the must-see ruin of 'The Old Pomene Hotel' on the point of the bay which only operated for 6 years and was abandoned in 1974 during the civil war in Mozambique. It has never been rebuilt.
