The Poor Clares are a contemplative order founded 800 years ago by St Clare of Assisi. Under the inspiration and guidance of St Francis. We are known as the Second Order of St. Francis. And our houses can be found in every continent in the world, except Antarctica! Our life is still based on the rule which St. Clare wrote for herself and her sisters, the first to be written by a woman for women which was officially approved by the Pope. Although prayer is the centre of our life and our official work (Liturgy comes from a Greek word meaning work! We also have to run the house and garden, try to earn our living, look after our elderly and sick sisters and receive the guests who come to visit or stay with us. All this has to be fitted into the daily timetable of prayer. Cards, notelets, posters and prayer cards. Some sisters give spiritual guidance. To those wishing for help in following the Lord more closely in their lives.
