Pork Chop Diaries 2010: Ferro to Women in Trucking: You go girls!

http://porkchopdiaries2010.blogspot.com/2010/03/ferro-to-women-in-trucking-you-go-girls.html

Saturday, March 27, 2010. Ferro to Women in Trucking: You go girls! In Administrator Ferro's remarks, she congratulated the women for their safety records, for their tenacity, and for their contributions to the industry. She said women truckers compose 5 percent of the nation's truck drivers. Her comment "Let's DOUBLE IT! Sometimes I amazed at how many acquaintances I have made in the 22 years I've covered the industry. Many of them are women, and many were here today. Posted by Sandi Soendker. The 2009 ...

Pork Chop Diaries 2010: Just smoke, no mirrors

http://porkchopdiaries2010.blogspot.com/2010/03/just-smoke-no-mirrors.html

Thursday, March 25, 2010. Just smoke, no mirrors. Media day at the Mid-America Trucking Show is a ton of fun. We get a preview of all the cool new products and trucks that attendees will experience over the next three days. The only group that might be a bit harder to impress than truckers is the trucking media. But, we have to give a nod to Kenworth for giving it a shot with its rollout of the T700. Check out this video Keith Goble shot during the introduction. Posted by Jami Jones. Blinded by the light.

Pork Chop Diaries 2010: 2010 MATS: it's a wrap ... well, almost

http://porkchopdiaries2010.blogspot.com/2010/03/2010-mats-its-wrap-well-almost.html

Saturday, March 27, 2010. 2010 MATS: it's a wrap . well, almost. Day Three at MATS is coming to a close and I see the crowd thinning out and exhibitors getting read to tear down booths and pack up. We've said goodbyes to many trucking friends, ones we see only once a year. In the press room, it's a 15-minute warning to pack up gear, finish stories. Most journalists are gone now. Dorothy Cox of. Our senior editor Jami Jones is a guest today. Our LL writers and super bloggers Bill Hudgins (Nashville) and S...

Pork Chop Diaries 2010: Crawl, Walk, Zoom

http://porkchopdiaries2010.blogspot.com/2010/03/crawl-walk-zoom.html

Friday, March 26, 2010. Crawl, Walk, Zoom. Holy cow - it's already Friday and my good intentions have disappeared like exhaust from pre-emission regulation stacks. We're being inundated with the latest information. EGR vs SCR. New trucks and refurbished ones. HOS regulations. Ergonomics and aerodynamics. MATS is a veritable smorgasbord. Somewhere in the country people are playing basketball and checking their brackets. Here, we're playing with trucks and checking our wallets. Posted by Suzanne Stempinski.

Pork Chop Diaries 2010: Blinded by the light

http://porkchopdiaries2010.blogspot.com/2010/03/blinded-by-light.html

Saturday, March 27, 2010. Blinded by the light. Well, the third and final day of MATS is upon us, and the morning sun is beaming down upon the Land Line Now. Booth in the north wing lobby like a beacon of hope, summoning all truckers to come and join us in our mighty quest to . ahem, sorry. I got carried away for a minute there. That's what this place will do to you. Today, Leland Martin will join us at the Land Line Now. I have to go now. The beacon of the booth is beckoning me home. OOIDA media takes t...

Pork Chop Diaries 2014: The droid he was looking for?

http://porkchopdiaries2014.blogspot.com/2014/03/in-februarys-land-line-magazine-wrote.html

Thursday, March 27, 2014. The droid he was looking for? In February's Land Line Magazine. I wrote about robotic trucks and efforts to develop a truck-driving robot. So I was more than a little surprised walking through the West Wing of the Kentucky Expo Center this week at MATS to bump into recruiter Josh Parker and his newest recruit. Thursday, March 21, 2013. Anne Ferro will participate in Driver Health Walk. Big news regarding a popular event that will take place here in Louisville on Friday. We just heard that FMCSA Administrator Anne Ferro, who is attending MATS as part of the agency's listening sessions, will be participating in the Driver Health Walk. The event is hosted by Trucking Solutions Group, a group of professional truck drivers, and is co-hosted by TA/Petro. Linda says you can preregister at. Miles and smiles, trucker s...

Pork Chop Diaries 2011: Highway Heroes...Truly

http://porkchopdiaries2011.blogspot.com/2011/04/highway-heroestruly.html

Friday, April 1, 2011. I think the word 'hero' is way overused. But in the case of the four Goodyear Highway Hero finalists at the Mid America Trucking Show, it's a fit. Two of them gave CPR to accident victims who'd suffered serious injuries and called 911 to get help. One of them took care of a young woman until the ambulance came. Her arm had been almost completely severed from her body. He talked to her. He kept her warm. He told her she would make it, and she did. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://porkchopdiaries2011.blogspot.com/2011/04/2011-mats-it-was-work-it-was-fun.html

Friday, April 8, 2011. 2011 MATS: It was work, it was fun … waaaayyy fun. Before the show, our OOIDA staff surveyed our schedules and decided that the theme song for MATS should be “Still Crazy After All These Years.” But after surviving it – my personal designation for official song of the 40th anniversary MATS event/marathon is Pearl Jam’s old song, “I’m Still Alive.”. Staff from Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and OOIDA’s magazine Land Line. And radio show Land Line Now. Since Monday, M...

Pork Chop Diaries 2011: Life on the lot

http://porkchopdiaries2011.blogspot.com/2011/04/life-on-lot.html

Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Life on the lot. 8220;Are you truckers? 8221; I asked a pair of showgoers. 8220;No, but my feller is,” came one gal’s response, pure Kentuckian. The Mid-America Trucking Show has a large cast of characters. Sure, there are cool exhibits and products, trade-show shwag and announcements – but without the thousands of patrons buzzing around like busy bees, there is no show. To experience the people is to experience the show itself. There was “Garian’s Dad,” aka Chri...Shortly after m...

Monday, April 4, 2011. Dave Sweetman and Jason Alt. At this year's edition of the Paul K. Young, I was able to once again award my "Pick" to a guy I have known for nearly 20 years. He's the owner of a red Peterbilt 359 that is one of the world's most famous trucks for many reasons. Did you ever meet someone who is just COOL? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Pork Chop Diaries 2011: MATS and April tomfoolery

http://porkchopdiaries2011.blogspot.com/2011/04/mats-and-april-tomfoolery_07.html

Thursday, April 7, 2011. MATS and April tomfoolery. At the end of this week, we wrap up our Pork Chop Diaries for 2011. But I want to tell you a couple more stories that we’ll be talking about for a while. As you know, April 1 is a day where the prankster streak in some folks takes over normal sensibilities and they’ll do anything to pull off a really grand joke. This year, that day fell on the Friday of the Mid-America Trucking Show. So Evan has everyone’s attention, right? The Pork Chop Diaries is your...

Pork Chop Diaries 2011: The next generation

http://porkchopdiaries2011.blogspot.com/2011/04/next-generation.html

Monday, April 4, 2011. Pulling out of the parking lot at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center on Saturday, April 2, after the Mid-America Trucking Show closed, I asked my travel companions what their favorite parts of the show were. What they shared didn’t surprise me as much as the fact they didn't ask me what I really enjoyed. Then after I thought about it, I realized it’s because for two days it was pretty much all I talked about. Logan and Mason with Todd and Beth Roccapriore. I introduced Logan t...

Pork Chop Diaries 2012: Humor and hope, a MATS tradition

http://porkchopdiaries2012.blogspot.com/2012/03/humor-and-hope-mats-tradition.html

Saturday, March 24, 2012. Humor and hope, a MATS tradition. While comparing notes and photos from this year’s Mid-America Trucking Show, a co-worker suggested I was somehow like Forrest Gump because no matter where I go, I always seem to be in the middle of the action. I haven't ever really thought of it like that; I simply subscribe to the fact that everyone has a story to tell. MATS hatters, L-R, Michael Nahodyl, Mike Smith, Jennifer Shupe and Daniel Miller. 8220;They tell you that you hear a freight t...

Pork Chop Diaries

Thursday, March 22, 2012. Yardsticks by the yard. Seems like an entire forest must've been cut down to supply yardsticks for MATS. Everyone has one. Sunday, March 30, 2008. MATS is over; road trip time. The 2008 Mid-America Trucking Show is over. Was attendance as big as past years? Saturday, March 29, 2008. Trucker Buddies, what neat people. An amazing thing, with the cost of fuel so high, all but about two of these busy truckers were here in Louisville to accept the kudos. The February honoree was Tom ...

Pork Chop Diaries '09

Monday, March 23, 2009. MATS: Fade to Black, It's a Wrap. After my two-year absence from the carpeted halls of the Mid-America Trucking Show and some anticipation, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. With the ever-constant news of the down economy, the terrible trucking conditions of low rates, scarce freight and an overall mood of sour business, what I came away with was far different. I met many, many friends, and some of them I never even knew I had. Readers of my columns over the years, fo...

Pork Chop Diaries 2010

Monday, March 29, 2010. Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a (Louahvulle) convoy. When the halls clear at the Mid-America Trucking Show each year, it's a little sad it's over and almost a little anti-climactic. That is until this year. Louisville's downtown was treated to an awe-inspiring convoy of 73 trucks that circled downtown. Horns blaring. Lights flashing. Smiles and waves from everyone - participants and spectators alike. Vickie is a 23-year trucking veteran with 2 million safe miles behind h...

Pork Chop Diaries 2012

Monday, April 2, 2012. A fitting end to a good time …. I don’t do it every year, but for some reason, I don’t really feel like I’ve completed my MATS experience unless I make it out to Papa John’s. Of course, I’m talking about Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, where the satellite truck parking is for the big show. That’s how it started, something small, something nice. But a couple of years ago, it took off toward something bigger. In the years since that first concert, the single gypsy camp has become many ...

Pork Chop Diaries 2013

Tuesday, March 26, 2013. Riding shotgun on the Spirit truck. The grand finale of our 2013 MATS trip was a strange one – how to get home. As we were enjoying the annual spectacle in Louisville, Mother Nature laid a whopper on us in the form of a massive snowstorm back home in western Missouri. It engulfed the KC metro area, and on the weather radar we could see it heading west and spreading south as it developed. I got particularly attached to Sassy. Twelve hours on the truck was a blast for me, riding up...

Pork Chop Diaries 2014

Monday, March 31, 2014. Riding shotgun in OOIDA's new Western Star. When it comes to trucks, the way it drives, the way it works, the way it holds up to the task at hand is all critical. How it looks is also high on the list. That’s why Western Star Truck Sales came up with a Design Our Star project, handing the power to Western Star fans to vote on what went into Western Star’s 2014 show truck. Come on, Jon, let's roll. I like the way “Land Line Now” Host Mark Reddig described its arrival. 8220;Tony Jus...
