And the insignificant ramblings of a town mouse. The Cold War Nightmare of My Childhood…. Between 1942 and 1964, RAF Melton Mowbray was situated to the south of the village, towards Great Dalby. The Class A airfield was originally intended for aircraft maintenance but was taken over by Transport Command. Many types of aircraft were flown from the airfield, including Spitfire (my favourite! Mosquito, Corsair, Vengeance, Hellcat, Dakota and Halifax aircraft, plus Horsa and Hadrian gliders. Next post →.

And the insignificant ramblings of a town mouse. Speedway racing was staged at the Greyhound Stadium in Melton Mowbray in 1949. There was a meeting classified as being “dirt track” on August the 7th 1949. The only other information is that the Clerk of the Course was W Plant. This was Wilf Plant, a well known rider pre-war and post-war and a member of England teams that toured South Africa in the late 1940s. Wilfred “Wilf” Plant. I decided that criticising Melton Council for their tardiness in response to my question of motorcycle parking was maybe a bit harsh (actually it wasn’t as they were poor! Yes, they were slow. Yes, I had to chase them more than once. I’ve emailed exactly the same question that I posed to Melton to the councils in Grantham, Oakham and Stamford. I shall, of course post the results in due course.
