Boating Safety

Regulations implemented in 2009 by the Federal Government. Mandates that individuals operating a motorized pleasure craft must have a P.C.O.C., or Pleasure Craft Operator's Certificate. You must also, if a VHF Marine radio is installed on your boat, have a Restricted Radio Operator's Certificate. In addition, all vessels must comply with regulations that specify the type of equipment which is mandatory aboard, such as Personal Flotation Devices, lights required on the vessel, fire extinguishers, etc.

Port Alberni Marine Rescue Society raises funds through three avenues:. Major expenditures, such as a new rescue vessel, are largely funded by the provincial government through grants from B.C. Lottery Corporation, usually over multiple years. The Government of B.C. has made public safety and security a priority in the distribution of such grants. T here is no payment to the volunteers, except for fuel costs if a private vessel is involved in an approved mission.

We currently operate a 34' Falkins Class II Fast Response Craft, built by Titan Boats in Sidney, B.C. It replaced our Zodiac Hurricane 733 rigid hull inflatable, which was sold in 2010 to a new CCGA station up the coast in Gingolx. The funds received were applied toward the cost of the new boat. This new rescue vessel, which we received on April 1, will vastly improve our ability to respond to missions and to return safely.

Our Volunteers come from all walks of life. Many, but not all, operate boats of their own ranging from small runabouts to converted fishing vessels. Some have been members of the Unit for almost 30 years and have in the early days provided their own vessels for missions when requested to do so. The one thing in common among them is their dedication in serving the community on the water. They participate in rescue missions, on-water and classroom training, and public education events.
