Saturday, March 20, 2010. The changes themselves is some kind of story. While rehearsing the precipitously difficult piece in the studio, John Coltrane can be heard saying to his struggling colleagues, “I don't think I'm gonna improve this, you know . . . I ain't goin be sayin nothin, (I goin do) tryin just, makin the changes. I ain't goin be, tellin no story. Like tellin them black. Ll tell 'em a story." Surprised by this idea, Coltrane responds, "You think the changes're the story! While I was in Panam...

Tuesday, October 4, 2011. THRT 101D: Final Examination. Last weekend Kate Morris's Venn Diagrams or The Bee Play. Opened at the DDC and thus, my set for her play was a complete as it ever would be. Photos are below. The experience was enlightening, as I imagined, but differently so. I knew my efforts would be constrained by practical concerns —. The first couple weeks I spent amassing as many relevant objects as I could. Don't even get me started about rugs.], and then to bring it all together see wh...

Flotsam, Jetsam, Ligan: February 2011
http://flotsam-jetsam-ligan.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 24, 2011. In the history of the US there are times when our political middle seems to disappear. Where are our Moderates now? Personally, I think a Missing Middle is to our country's tremendous detriment ‒. Especially when the challenges we face are so large and multifaceted. We need the all wisdom of all our wisest and moderates help us to parse that out. Below is my design protest for compromise, moderation, and middle ground:. Posted by Daniel Scott. Flotsam, Jetsam, Ligan: November 2009
http://flotsam-jetsam-ligan.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 16, 2009. These are two images I made a little over a year ago for a series I was tentatively calling "the rising." The visual look of the series was developing from what I was seeing in Japanese ehon [1]. And watercolor. Th. I intended the second image, to represent in part a passage into death, but also, as the moon functions symbolically in Western tradition, a form of rebirth. I had it in mind that the images would be viewed cyclically, so that one could start again at the rising...

Flotsam, Jetsam, Ligan: April 2012

Thursday, April 12, 2012. A few concept sketches for the set. Josh and Rebecca listened, reassured me that they shared my goals, I joined on, and we were off. As I read Josh's play, I was struck by how it worked as a sort of inverted nativity play—turned upside, inside out, mangled, nailed back together from smoldering fragments of an apocalypse. Here are some notes I had on the story-line that informed the set design:. An overall shot of the set. It is composed of two sections: (1) The living space ...

Flotsam, Jetsam, Ligan: A Rite of Passage
http://flotsam-jetsam-ligan.blogspot.com/2011/09/rites-of-passage.html
Sunday, September 25, 2011. A Rite of Passage. In August, I participated in the annual Burning Man art festival in the northern Nevada desert. The theme for 2011 was "Rites of Passage" and in honor of my 92 year-old grandmother, an important person in my life for whom I think that phrase is most poignant (she has been living with dementia, and now Alzheimer's, for the past three years), I built a bike (thanks Free Cycles. In Missoula for all the help! It was nice while it lasted. Hand sewn seat cover.
