Sunday, September 21, 2008. BT: Diversify to absorb shocks (20 Sep 2008). Diversify to absorb shocks. Regular, diversified investing over long term is best for retirement portfolio, says Genevieve Cua. Should you take a vastly difference stance towards asset allocation? After all, correlations have clearly and distressingly shot up, obviating any diversification benefit you previously may have reaped through your asset combination. This means taking a portfolio approach to your investments, picking asset...

Thursday, October 02, 2008. BT: Time to buy? No - patience is a virtue (02 Oct 2008). No - patience is a virtue. WHENEVER stock markets behave as they are now, it's tempting to ask whether it's time to 'bargain hunt'. Indeed, as each passing day brings a new low - be it 24, 25 or 26 months for the Straits Times Index - the temptation to buy probably grows stronger, aided no doubt by a steady stream of 'buy' calls from brokers, all and sundry. So will it soon be time to buy? From its all-time high, the Do...

Monday, September 22, 2008. BT: Value hunting on the Street (22 Sep 2008). Value hunting on the Street. Tried and proven value investing is the way to go in these times and it may be time to start nibbling at some value stocks now, says JASON LOW. In his book Wall Street On Sale, author and value investor Timothy Vick talks about picking assets on the cheap. And it seems that bearish times like these are when value investors come out hunting for bargains. In financial markets, however, there appears to b...

Tuesday, September 23, 2008. BT: Crises of '97 and '08: lessons to be learned (23 Sep 2008). Crises of '97 and '08: lessons to be learned. Interestingly in both cases, there are fire sales that make some smile. We can take turns to mock each other for the exposed weaknesses in the financial markets and institutions. But, that should not be the point. The two storms have a lot of similarities and we can learn from them. Many blamed the Asian financial crisis on the lack of corporate transparency. The ...

Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Seeking Alpha: A Black Hole Nearly Swallows Wall Street (23 Sep 2008). A Black Hole Nearly Swallows Wall Street. By: Tony Daltorio posted on: September 23, 2008. It looks like the non-scientists were right on the mark. A black hole appeared right in the middle of Wall Street and swallowed Lehman Brothers. The black hole also forced the Merrill Lynch Blundering Herd into the arms of Bank of America and giant insurer AIG into the arms of Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam to the Rescue?

My Investment Thoughts: May 2006

Thursday, May 25, 2006. Little reason for investors of Asian stocks to panic. Business Times - 25 May 2006. Little reason for investors of Asian stocks to panic. By WILLIAM PESEK JR. IT'S all a bit disorienting. Indian stocks, among Asia's star performers, are plunging, while Chinese shares, those perennial laggards, are surging. A crisis probably isn't afoot, though. This region has come too far and financial systems are much too upgraded for that. What's happening has more to do with global ris...Amid ...

My Investment Thoughts: Peter Lynch: Use Your Edge
http://invest-thots.blogspot.com/2008/08/peter-lynch-use-your-edge.html
Sunday, August 10, 2008. Peter Lynch: Use Your Edge. What's the best way to invest $1million? Tip one: Don't buy stocks on tips alone. One of the oldest sayings on Wall Street is "Let your winners run, and cut your losers.". 1) Maybe they traded a new stock every week. 2) Maybe they bought stocks in companies they knew little about, companies with shaky prospects and bad balance sheets. 3) Maybe they didn't follow these companies closely enough to get out when the news got worse. You can wait until the c...

My Investment Thoughts: October 2005
http://invest-thots.blogspot.com/2005_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 28, 2005. Purchase of Koda @ 29.5 cts (27 Oct 05). The stockmarket has corrected significantly and my portfolio has taken a hit. My unrealised investment would likely to go into red for the first time since Jun 2003. Aftering browsing through the prospectus and annual reports for the past two years, I decided to take up a small stake to keep my interest in this company. My feel about the management after reading the reports:. Posted by mrmoon at 12:13 AM. Wednesday, October 05, 2005.
