Storytime with Petey: January 2014
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 2, 2014. Petey's dating manual: Revisiting compliments. I wrote about how to compliment people. A while ago. Unsurprisingly, I didn't say everything that there is to be said on the subject. Here are a few more ideas for how to build people up. Give compliments when they are due. This problem is sometimes chronic rather than acute: it's not one kind word that causes us to feel indebted, but a pattern. If the feeling of debt induces us to kind actions, it may be healthy; if it fills u...

Storytime with Petey: July 2015
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, July 26, 2015. My search for truth. I was the kid who read encyclopedias for fun. I still am, although my status as a kid is up for debate. Encyclopedias offered a wealth of information on virtually any subject I could think of. I loved school (well, I loved the parts of school that had to do with learning). To me, the world was full of wonder and books and school allowed me to explore that world. My religion teaches that it's possible to know the truthfulness of the doctrine (see John 7:17.

Storytime with Petey: The blind leading the blind
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-blind-leading-blind_27.html
Wednesday, May 27, 2015. The blind leading the blind. But our desire to help, however sincere, does not always help our friends. In fact, many of us end up making things worse for our friends instead of making them better. I have a few suggestions that I hope will help. Arranging dates for others. Or do you just happen to be fond of both of them? Respects your friends' autonomy. Be careful about information disclosure. Sometimes people you introduce never go on a date. Sometimes they go on a date or ...

Storytime with Petey: A metaphor
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-metaphor.html
Monday, January 26, 2015. I spent the morning on Friday with an occupational therapist. I've been dealing with wrist pain for years and, although I mostly manage it, I don't want to continue with it. I've raised my desk so I can stand at it and am developing the ability to do so without hurting myself. In short, therapy hurts more than life did before I started it but I believe that, with time, things will be better than they were before therapy. This is proving to be an appropriate metaphor for my l...

Storytime with Petey: November 2013
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 5, 2013. These philosophies are the result of different assumptions. It's easy to refute any of them, especially in their extreme versions. They argue back and forth, saying that the others are wrong. In so doing, they convince themselves that they've proven their own points. The assumption seems to be that if all other political philosophies are disproved, theirs must be correct. They fail to recognize one crucial bit of information:. They're all wrong. All of them. Storytime with Petey: April 2014
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Wednesday, April 9, 2014. I've written before about why I call myself Petey. For those who haven't read the post and are disinclined to do so, I'll summarize very briefly: I have little trouble getting people to take me seriously enough but sometimes people take me too seriously. Calling myself by a ridiculous diminutive seems to help. It's also occurred to me that the effect of my nickname may wear away very quickly. It helps with first impressions and first conversations, but people become accustom...

Storytime with Petey: Apple blight

Tuesday, January 20, 2015. In a burst of irony, the fix ended up being forcing the app to close and opening it again; Apple's default cookie policy is that only sites visited by the user could set cookies. In trying to fix the problem, my mother had gone to a FAQ page on the site in question, which meant that her app could now use cookies from the site. And click through to the studies), many people believe that they can't understand computers. In the same way that people shut their minds down when t...

Storytime with Petey: October 2014
http://storytimewithpetey.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 30, 2014. The cure for high blood pressure. I hear a lot about entitlements these days. It may be because I'm ( by some definitions. A millennial. It may be because I have friends on both extremes of the political spectrum – one side generally uses the word to describe things as what people are owed and the other uses the word to accuse people of being spoiled. This kind of thinking is evident in the way that people drive. Or the belief that only the self exists and that all other peopl...
